Rugby clubs issue statement after crowd trouble in 'Shed' mars cup final

Crowd scenes

The North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup Final was brought to a premature end on Sunday after a mass brawl broke out between supporters of local clubs, Matson and Longlevens, in the Shed at Kingsholm.

Longlevens were comfortably ahead on the scoreboard when the match was abandoned and were declared the winners. However, what should have been a celebration of local rugby was ruined by the behaviour of a small section of supporters and both clubs have issued statements condemning the violence.

Matson’s Chairman Lee Bayliss said in a statement: “As the Chairman of Matson RFC, I would like to apologise for any part members of our club played in the altercation at Gloucester RFC on Sunday 25th May, during the North Gloucestershire Combination Cup Final between Matson RFC and Longlevens RFC. In what should have been a great family day out celebrating local rugby, was ruined by a few supporters from both sides.

“We will be meeting as a club to discuss this matter and decide what action we need to take, following a review of footage and statements. We would like to reiterate that as a club Matson RFC do not condone this behaviour and takes such matters very seriously.

“We would like to congratulate Longlevens on their well-deserved win in the senior cup and are as disappointed for them that they were robbed of the moment to lift the cup at Kingsholm in a joyous celebration.”

It was the second time in three years that Longlevens had won the cup, having ended a 62-year wait for the trophy in 2023. Their rugby committee issued the following statement: “Longlevens Rugby is deeply upset by the events that unfolded during the recent North Gloucestershire Combination Cup Final at Kingsholm, which led to the premature end of what should have been a celebration of grassroots rugby.

“We are aware of and greatly regret the crowd trouble involving individuals from both sets of supporters. This behaviour falls far short of the values we uphold as a club – respect, sportsmanship, and community. Rugby is a game that brings people together, and there is no place for violence, intimidation, or disrutopn, whether on or off the pitch.

“We are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities and competition organisers as they conduct their investigations. As a club, we are also reviewing all available information and will take appropriate internal measures where necessary.

“We extend our apologies to the players, coaches, match officials, and supporters from both Clubs whose day was overshadowed by these unacceptable actions. To the wider rugby community, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone involved in our sport.”

The Gloucestershire RFU was approached for a comment.

Lifetime bans for these hooligans. No place in rugby for these people

A great look.

Wouldn’t even get that at a Millwall game.

Why Henry Pollock's x-factor could earn him a Lions Test start

Nick,

I am a long suffering England fan, who has had to endure watching 4 years of dull rugby, poor selections and painful defeats. Steve Borthwick talks about GPS and picks squads by numbers and then we put in a poor performance on the pitch - it’s been a consistent trend.

Something changed in the Six Nations and we totally changed our style (literally overnight) and played some really good footie, which finally felt like positive rugby for a change.

Genge has regained his pore-Covid form and is looking back to his best and is head and shoulders above Porter.

Chessum has had a good year and hasn’t played a poor International game this season.

Tom Curry was outstanding in the 6 Nations but they have been playing him at 6, wheras he is better at 7 and is lethal at the breakdown.

Tom Willis was brought into the starting team at 8 and has been one of the best England players over the last year, who should have been on this Lions tour at 8. Earl had his best game since 2020 last week - not sure 1 game warrants Lions selection over a poor combination side and he is certainly second choice for his club 7 country behind Willis.

Pollock will be a good player but like all young emerging players, he is inconsistent and can go quiet in games, which is why Curry should be the starter at 7. He brings energy to games, which is why he is good from the bench but there is an argument to say he is the 5th best England openside (Curry x2, Underhill & Earl are currently better) but will improve over the next 5 years. We just need to stop the media building him up for a fall, let him play and develop and you will see a sensational Henry Pollock for the Lions in 4 years time.

Lions will be too powerful over 80 mins, so doesn’t really matter who they pick. Just please don’t put too much hype on Pollock. His 20 mins of International rugby going into this tour were positive but the media caused a frenzy and no other player would be selected on this basis.

Let’s enjoy the rugby and give Pollock the space and time he requires.
