Chiefs hold on to complete double over Hurricanes

The Chiefs survived a late scare to claim a 17-14 Super Rugby win over the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium.

Dave Rennie’s side completed the double over the second-placed Hurricanes, with Damian McKenzie’s penalty ultimately proving decisive.

But the visitors had to come from behind after Vaea Fifita’s try capped some early Canes pressure.

All Black Beauden Barrett’s poor kick handed the Chiefs easy possession and a route back into the match before the interval, with Aaron Cruden the man to touch down after a slick passing move.

The Hurricanes – who play the British and Irish Lions on June 27 – fell behind for the first time just past the hour mark, with replacement Shaun Stevenson’s storming run pivotal to James Lowe’s try.

McKenzie added the extras and then kicked a late penalty, which was vital as Wes Goosen touched down in the corner to set up a tense finish.

In the end it was only enough to earn the home side a bonus point which keeps them one ahead of their opponents in the New Zealand conference.
