Leigh Halfpenny fought back emotion as he brought the curtain down on his glittering career as Cardiff sealed a URC play-off place with a dramatic 22–16 victory over the Stormers at a raucous Arms Park on Friday night.

The retiring full-back, making his final appearance for the club where it all began, was given a standing ovation when he entered late on before being engulfed by jubilant supporters at the final whistle.

As the celebrations spilled onto the pitch, Halfpenny admitted he had been “overwhelmed” by the reaction to his retirement announcement, describing the occasion as a “truly special” way to bow out.

“I’ve just been overwhelmed, to be honest, the last week or so since the announcement,” said Halfpenny. “Just the messages from everyone, I’ve been blown away. I am just so grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible.

“I just feel so fortunate to be able to go out on my own terms. To be back at the Arms Park where it started and to have my friends and family in the crowd, my wife and two kids, was extremely special. It doesn’t get much better than that.

“Cardiff gave me my opportunity as an 18-year-old. To be able to finish here in front of the fans at the Arms Park means a lot. It is truly special. I am just extremely grateful for everything that rugby has given me.”

One of Wales’ most accomplished full-backs, Halfpenny won 101 caps and scoring over 800 international points.

A 2013 British & Irish Lion, he was Player of the Series against Australia, amassing 49 points. Renowned for elite goal-kicking, he topped Six Nations scoring charts three times.

The 37-year-old played for Cardiff, Toulon and Scarlets, winning the European Cup in France, and earned multiple Welsh caps across three World Cups before announcing his retirement earlier this season.
