Brumbies reward ‘naturally gifted’ rookie with new multi-year deal
ACT Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham has doubled down on the “naturally gifted” description of Kye Oates, who has been rewarded for a promising rookie Super Rugby Pacific season with a new two-year deal through to the end of 2028.
Larkham first labelled Oates as a “naturally gifted” athlete when the former Australia Sevens flyer was named in the Brumbies’ squad for the first time. Oates debuted for the Brumbies against the Queensland Reds in round four, and made another two appearances that season.
Oates started on the wing in those three appearances, which included matches against the Fijian Drua and Chiefs, before sustaining a season-ending injury. The 27-year-old played the full 80 in each of those matches as well, before sustaining a season-ending injury.
The utility back was played for the Brumbies Runners when he sustained an ankle injury, requiring surgery and bringing his rookie season to an end. But Oates is now eyeing a return to Super Rugby Pacific next season, having agreed to a new deal with the club.
“I’m really excited to be staying at the Brumbies and continuing to work with the coaches and the calibre of players we have here,” Oates said.
“The outside backs are a great group to learn from, and being around those guys every day is only going to help me improve my game.
“The injury was frustrating, especially after getting a taste of Super Rugby this year, but I’m working hard with the medical and high-performance staff to get back to my best. The focus is on being ready to go for 2027.”
Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham added: “Kye is a promising player with a valuable skillset, and he’s a real positive influence around the group,” Larkham said.
“He’s a naturally gifted athlete with good acceleration, great footwork and an ability to identify space and create opportunities for those around him.
“He’s working hard to return to his best in 2027, and we’re excited to see what he can bring to the team next season.”
Oates debuted for the Australia Men’s Sevens side in 2022 at the fan-favourite Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, and more recently earned representative honours with the First Nations & Pasifika XV against the British & Irish Lions last year.
