Bok Boan Venter makes 'tough decision' to leave Edinburgh

Rookie Springbok prop Boan Venter has made the ‘tough decision’ to leave Edinburgh and return to his native South Africa.

It is a decision that will surprise few.

Venter – at one stage aiming for a Scotland cap via residency – was called in the Springbok squad this year by Rassie Erasmus and has gone on to become a trusted regular in their 2025 campaign, featuring eight times since making his debut against Georgia.

Edinburgh have revealed that the 28-year-old has signed for Johannesburg outfit the Emirates Lions. He will join them at the end of Edinburgh’s URC season. Given his switch of allegiance at Test level, it would have made the SRU’s decision to let the loosehead go far more likely than not.

“It was a tough decision to leave a club that has become home, but I am excited for the opportunity with the Emirates Lions and to be closer to family,” said Venter.

“I want to thank all the Edinburgh fans for their incredible support over the years. I have enjoyed every moment of my time in this amazing city and wearing the jersey.

“I can assure everyone that I will be giving my absolute all for this badge and my teammates right up until the final whistle of the season.”

Born in Somerset West, the 118kg loosehead prop emerged through the Sharks system before moving to Europe with the Scottish capital club. He has scored 19 tries in 96 games since joining in February 2021. He was also the first prop to score a hat-trick for Edinburgh in the professional era, against Ospreys in January 2022.
