Blitzboks' Wehr leaves Sale after covering injured England international
Sale Sharks have confirmed that winger Gurshwin Wehr has left the club following a short-term deal.
The 27-year-old made the move to England from South Africa in December to provide cover for injured England full-back Joe Carpenter, who was out with an ankle injury.
Upon signing, Sale director of rugby compared the winger to compatriot and double World Cup winger Cheslin Kolbe, saying “he’s fast and elusive, he works hard and he scores loads of tries.”
The South Africa Sevens international made five appearances for Sale, all from the bench, including an Investec Champions Cup runout against his former side, the Sharks, last month. He will leave with the club sitting in seventh in the Gallagher PREM and with an Investec Champions Cup round of 16 tie with Harlequins in April.
Wehr was part of a Griquas side that won the Currie Cup in 2025 and will return to help them defend their title this year.
“The decision to come to Sale was a no brainer,” he said after signing. “It’s a great club that plays really good rugby and I think I will fit in here really nicely.
“Since I arrived last week everyone has really made me feel welcome. Now I’m so excited about getting on the pitch and playing with some of the brilliant players here, like George Ford. I think my style of play will fit in well with the team’s style.
“While I’m here I want to do my best to prove myself and hopefully be here for much longer. I want to win trophies and be part of a successful team and bring some magic to the club on the field.”
