Bath player ratings: Johann van Graan’s men’s poor discipline and errors saw this turn into quite the scrap but bench firepower made a huge difference as the visitors finished the stronger and bagged a valuable 31-26 away win over Sale Sharks.

Bath had to work for it. For long stretches, they played like a team desperate to give Sale free chances. Against that, Sale were full value in the first half, hammering Bath at scrum time and punishing every strip of ill-discipline. Tries from Tom O’Flaherty, Robert du Preez, Tom Roebuck and Luke Cowan-Dickie left Bath wobbling.

But whenever Bath strung phases together, they looked dangerous, and when their finishers entered the fray, the match swung.

Here are the Bath player ratings.

1. Scott Kirk – 5.5
A rough outing. Sale tighthead James Harper had his number at scrumtime and Bath could not get any stability on his side. Removed after just 34 minutes.

2. Dan Frost – 8
A day of peaks and troughs. Scored Bath’s opening try and worked tirelessly in defence. But the yellow card on 38 minutes swung momentum away. Lineout connection with Hill and Staddon was tidy.

3. Vilikesa Sela – 5.5
Similar story to Kirk. Bath were creaking badly at the scrum and Van Graan acted early. Off after 34 minutes.

4. Will Jeanes – 7
Showed up as a willing carrier and offered a big target in the lineout. At times a dominant presence, putting in a more than functional shift before being replaced on 52 minutes.

5. Ross Molony – 6
Workmanlike without ever taking hold of the contest. Tackled diligently and organised well. Subbed off and later reintroduced.

6. Ted Hill – 7
A heavy-traffic carrier for much of Bath’s slog in the first half. Didn’t get huge metres but kept punching dents in the Sale line. Dependable.

7. Ethan Staddon – 8.5
Dynamic and industrious, and a key figure in the lineout. Scored Bath’s second try from close range after a quick tap from Carreras. Off the back of this performance, Bath supporters will be miffed to see him off to West Country rivals Bristol Bears next season.

8. Miles Reid – 6.5
Steady but not always hugely influential. Defended well, carried hard and hit his rucks but was subbed at half-time as Bath reshuffled.

9. Tom Carr-Smith – 6.5
A clean assist for Frost’s try and generally crisp service, but struggled to accelerate Bath’s play in a messy first half. Replaced on the hour.

10. Santiago Carreras – 7
A tale of two halves. In the first: errors, poor decisions and a lot of turnovers. In the second: decisive breaks, tempo, composure and two major involvements in tries. A big reason Bath rallied.

11. Will Muir – 6
A bit off from his best. Loose hands and too many avoidable errors stunted Bath’s attack down his flank.

12. Cameron Redpath – 7
Assured in contact and a threat with ball in hand. The odd defensive lapse but otherwise a busy, effective outing.

13. Louie Hennessey – 8
Outstanding. Scored a decent try, carried with venom and looked Bath’s sharpest back throughout. A  birthday performance to remember.

14. Joe Cokanasiga – 8
Bath’s most potent carrier in a literal sense. Broke the Sale line twice, made more metres than any Bath player and was a constant physical problem. Yellow card aside, a decent shift.

15. Tom de Glanville – 7.5
Not electric in attack but really effective defensively. Two turnovers from fullback and sound backfield positioning.

REPLACEMENTS – 8.5
Game-changing impact. Beno Obano and Thomas du Toit shored up a creaking scrum immediately. Kepu Tuipulotu was superb, carrying like a back and producing the break that set van der Linde’s try. Barbeary and Van der Linde delivered the knockout blows with back-to-back scores – the bench quite literally won this match.
