Bath player ratings: Bath somehow scored 48 points at Franklin’s Gardens and still left Northampton comprehensively beaten, such was the extraordinary attacking display produced by both teams in a 71-48 contest.

They were every bit Saints’ equals for much of a breathless opening half, with Arthur Green and Kepu Tuipulotu tearing holes through the Northampton defence and Tom Carr-Smith helping Bath play at considerable speed. But their defence disintegrated as the match progressed, with Northampton ultimately running in 71 points and exposing Bath repeatedly in the wider channels.

15 Santiago Carreras – 5
Produced plenty in attack, making two line breaks, beating four defenders and scoring after Russell’s floated pass. His neat footballing touch and break earlier also showcased his ability. But the defensive side was costly: five missed tackles, falling for Dingwall’s dummy and a dreadful uncontested fumble that gifted Pater a 50-metre try.

14 Joe Cokanasiga – 4
Barely featured in possession, carrying only once for eight metres before being replaced after an hour. His defensive contribution was also problematic, missing four tackles as Northampton increasingly found space on Bath’s edges.

13 Max Ojomoh – 7
One of Bath’s more threatening backs despite not featuring prominently on the scoresheet. Played extremely flat to Northampton’s defensive line and continually offered different options, carrying nine times for 38 metres. Made nine tackles too, although three misses reflected the increasingly chaotic nature of the contest.

12 Cameron Redpath – 5
Struggled to exert much influence with ball in hand, managing only two carries for 16 metres. His defence was also exposed for Sleightholme’s hat-trick score, with the Saints wing powering through the midfield far too easily.

11 Charlie Griffin – 7
Scored his first PREM try with a strong finish after Carr-Smith’s superb flat pass and later created Bayliss’ score. Ten carries and two offloads illustrated his involvement, although three missed tackles were part of Bath’s wider defensive problems.

10 Finn Russell – 7.5
Created several excellent moments. His double-pump and pass in contact released Green for Bath’s opening try, while a beautiful floated pass later put Carreras over. Kicked well enough from the tee but his defence was relentlessly targeted, with six missed tackles the highest number in the match.

9 Tom Carr-Smith – 6
Dangerous when playing quickly. Supported Green’s break for Bath’s opening score, fired a superb flat pass past four defenders for Griffin and moved the ball rapidly after Tuipulotu’s carry before Griffin scored. The problem was his kicking: charged down twice in the opening 35 minutes after being too slow at the base, while four tackles were missed.

1 Scott Kirk – 5
Bath initially found themselves under pressure at scrum time before improving later in the half. Kirk carried six times for 11 metres and made six tackles but did not have a particularly notable individual influence before Obano replaced him after 53 minutes.

2 Kepu Tuipulotu – 8
Outstanding despite the result. His huge first-half break saw him power through Kundiona and Iyogun before fending Coles and releasing Green for a try. Another forceful carry generated the momentum for Green’s second. Finished with 36 metres from seven carries, two defenders beaten and a match-high two turnovers won. A big performance from an England hopeful.

3 Archie Griffin – 7
Forced his way over from close range after Tuipulotu had supplied the initial momentum and Carr-Smith moved the ball rapidly. Carried seven times but had less success once Northampton settled, before being replaced by Stuart shortly after half-time.

4 Will Jeanes – 5
A quiet afternoon before being replaced after 53 minutes. Carried five times for only five metres and made seven tackles, but was unable to significantly slow Northampton’s increasingly rampant attack.

5 Ross Molony – 4
Had an uncomfortable start when Coles burst through his tackle during one of the Saints lock’s early carries. Managed only three metres from five carries and five tackles before Ewels replaced him, with Northampton finding repeated success through the middle and wider channels.

6 Josh Bayliss – 6
His first-half yellow card for infringing under pressure proved costly as Freeman helped Saints exploit the resulting position. Responded superbly after the break with a finish worthy of a winger, using his pace to score in the corner. Seven carries, seven tackles and a line break produced a mixed overall afternoon.

7 Miles Reid – 5
Made 10 tackles during his brief outing but departed after only 22 minutes, with Ted Hill replacing him. Had little opportunity to influence the contest with ball in hand before his early exit.

8 Arthur Green – 8
Superb. Broke through from Russell’s pass before showing excellent hands to release Carr-Smith for Bath’s first try, then benefited from Tuipulotu’s destruction to score from 30 metres. Added another close-range score immediately after half-time. Led Bath with 17 carries, making 74 metres, two line breaks and two defenders beaten.

Replacements – 5
Jaco Coetzee provided the brightest impact with a line break, 23 metres and three defenders beaten, but Bath’s replacements were unable to stem Northampton’s second-half onslaught.

Is you’re scoring Bath’s players I’d have said Carley was worth at least a 8. Manufactured position or points for them no matter if they were knocking on carrying or trying to catch, off feet, passing forward. I think he gave one breakdown turnover all game in front of the posts to give Bath the lead at half time for a player who made no attempt at all to support his bodyweight.
