The Rugby Europe Championship is the premier rugby competition in Europe for sides that are not in the Six Nations.

In 2026, the teams in Pool A are Georgia, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Pool B consists of Portugal, Romania, Germany and Belgium.

Rugby Europe Championship History

Sides have competed in the Rugby Europe Championship since 1936, with the current divisional format adopted at the turn of the millennium. In 2024, Rugby Europe adopted the three-level format, with the Championship, Trophy and Conference introduced as the levels of competition.

The 2024 change also saw the Championship expanded from six to eight teams. This was because the standard of rugby that was being played by nations outside of the traditional powerhouses of Europe had improved rapidly. This was highlighted most prominently by sides such as Georgia and Portugal.

Since 2000, Georgia have been the most prolific team in the competition. They’ve won 17 titles and have finished as runners up five times. Meanwhile, Romania have won the competition five times, while Portugal enjoyed their maiden success in 2003.

Rugby Europe Championship Format

The Championship sees eight nations go head-to-head in two pools of four. Following round robin, the top two teams from each pool will progress to the semi finals. The winners of these two clashes will then face off in the final.

The sides that qualify in the bottom half of their respective pools progress to the ranking semi finals. These matches then impact the following year's Championship, through both seeding and relegation.

A team that wins a match in the Rugby Europe Championship is awarded four points. In the event of a draw, two points are awarded to both sides. On top of this, teams can also earn bonus points by scoring three more tries than their opponent or by losing by fewer than seven points.

How many teams get relegated from the Rugby Europe Championship?

Promotion and relegation between the Rugby Europe Championship and the Rugby Europe Trophy take place over a two-year cycle. No relegation took place in 2025, meaning one team will be relegated from the Championship to the Trophy at the conclusion of the 2026 competition.
