Top 50 Women's Rugby Players 2025

Since the Women's Rugby World Cup year has rolled around, we can look back over the last seven months and quite comfortably say that we have been treated to some brilliant rugby. Whether that's Aoife Wafer barging her way to the try line in the Women's Six Nations or Portia Woodman-Wickliffe mesmerising us with her pace and footwork in the Pacific Four Series. We've enjoyed watching every moment in the build up to the pinnacle event in our sport.

However, with so many incredible players in the women's game right now, and ahead of this marquee event in the rugby calendar, it has got us thinking about who the best female rugby players are at the moment, and indeed the pivotal question - who is the best women's rugby player in the world right now?

So we've done our own run down of the world's Top 50 women's rugby players for 2025:

I can’t remember when I read such a load of rubbish. so few Red Roses, Canadians on this list. Why? Just silly, what I call political opinions. Player of the year is usually correct and ok. But Sophie De Goede ommited from this list!!! I think you should tear it up and start again. Go back to school or something.

how can you not have Sophie de goede🇨🇦

Sophie de Goude is hands down the best female rugby player in the world…by a long shot.

Watch this space, definitely need more Black Ferns in this list 🥴 Jorja Miller, Braxton Sorensen-McGee, Renee Holmes, Layla Sae, Liana Mikaele Tu’u, Kennedy Tukuafu, Risa Pouri Lane, Theresa Setefano, Ayesha Leti I’iga !!

3 weeks in to wrwc 2025 I assume you are suitably embarrassed by this list particularly the omission of SDG…BTW lana Sheldon doesn't make a ,ist of top 50 hookers let alone players

The simple fact that Nadine Roos and Babalwa Latsha are not in this list reveals a fatal sampling bias in favour of the Global North. Let's keep neocolonialism out of rugby. And respect the remaining 48 of the top 50 statistically.

You heard it here first . The star of the upcoming RWC hasn’t even made the top 50. She has only played a few tests for the Black Ferns because she has come from sevens but I predict she will have an incredible impact at the Cup.

Her name is Jorja Miller and is an open side flanker.Watch this space .

I was just going to say the same thing. Jorja is wonderful to watch.

Maud Muir will blast her way into the top 10 after picking up player of the Tournament in this World Cup.

T
TG 112 days ago

From now on I'm going to use this article as evidence when people try to claim there's no anti-English bias in rugby. Red Roses are only the most successful national team in the history of the sport. Highest ever win percentage. Longest ever win streak. Won 57 out of 58 last matches. First we had the joke that was the “Team of the W6N”, now this farce.

R
RD 113 days ago

Yeah, I'm 100% biased, but it's tough to see Sophie left off this list. She is the heart and soul of Canadian Rugby, not just women's rugby in Canada, but the game more generally.

It's a fun way to create discussion, so fair enough, and the list is filled with extremely talented women who play world class rugby.

Hopefully post World Cup you’ll get a chance to fix this error for a true warrior and champion.

Let's go Canada!!!

K
KD 113 days ago

Not one South African. And just having beaten New Zealand women,!

T
TG 112 days ago

They beat the Black Ferns XV, not New Zealand. It was not a proper test match and was not capped. Black Ferns XV is sort of like a B Team for New Zealand women. Any time you see an international match and one or both teams has “XV” after the name, it wasn't a proper test match and the team with “XV” is unlikely to be the full strength national team.

Rugby 101 - Ed Pye 114 days ago

While comprehensive, this list is pretty outdated - a number of these players are not starters for their teams anymore. Players like Pelletier and Corrigan have been ursupred by other players. This is not to mention missing outstanding players like Jorja Miller

L
LE 114 days ago

Only 2 England players in top 10 and only 13 in top 50.

Given they have won 57 of their last 58 tests and are utterly dominant in womens rugby, i would expect far more. Englands second team would beat most countries easily (and have done many times).

Exactly what I was about to write. Almost word for word.

Totally stupid list. Maud Muir and Hannah Botterman should be right up there.

B
BP 114 days ago

Who made the choices? Quite invidious anyway. WPotY not in top 10 takes some explaining.

B
BC1812 115 days ago

Other than Woodman, Demant, Tessler, Hope, Bourgeois, Wafer and Olsen-Baker no issues with the top 10. Top 10 players inexplicably not included there are De Goede, Dow, Bern, Vernier, Ward, Kildunne and Matthews (my number one).

C
CB 115 days ago

You don't think Tessier belongs there? Just watch Canada with/without her. The Captain of the #2 team in the world and the true playmaker (Canada goes to second receiver as often as to 10)

v
vP 115 days ago

No Sophie deGeode? Not even in the top 50? I would pick her first every time. Easily the best forward in the world. Marley Packer doesn’t come close.

H

First off thanks for the rankings, it can’t have been easy, and though I don’t necessarily agree with the order; it does seem to have all the right names with a couple obvious injury exceptions.

Would we be able to see the voting panel for this, or how the ranking was achieved, whether by some ranking method collated, or if a number of people just sat together and hashed out an order?

Cheers!

C
CB 115 days ago

Bear in mind I do not think De Goede should be on the list, but if Woodman-Wickliffe is 1, how do you leave her off the list entirely? In two matches back, playing second row, 10/11 from the tee and a try. Just her kicking alone makes her a difference maker.

K
KL 115 days ago

Not quite sure how De Goede fails to qualify despite having return from injury when the list was released but Woodman-Wycliffe qualifies on the back of 2 games in 3 years. Ah well. We all have our quibbles but this was a fun exercise.

v
vP 115 days ago

Two games against two under performing teams. Remember RugbyPass is a NZ based/leaning website

C
Chris929 115 days ago

Bourgeois in the top 10 is stupid-shes not worlds best fullback,bourdon-sansus would be a player more at 6 or 7 than 2 and portia woodman number 1? shes been out the 15s game for years and has played what 3 tests on her return? sure she scored lots v usa but thats the usa-she didnt score against canada.

J
J Marc 115 days ago

Bah, as a french, Bernadou is not the first choice for tighthead in France but she is in the ranking instead of Kalfahoui who isn't… Bourgeois is maybe one of the best kicker at 22, but not one of the best fullback. After that, Bourdon is the best french player and maybe the best 9 in the world, but in a ranking it's hard to say if a winger is best than a halfback or a prop…. A ranking by number would have been more accurate…

B
BC1812 115 days ago

To paraphrase the words of Eric Morecombe “most of the right notes but not in the right order”.

J
JL 118 days ago

Any list that has Ellie and Sarah Betn out of the top 10 is just ludicrous. Drawn up by kiwi journalists at a guess.

K
KL 118 days ago

Any list like this will be controversial. I’m Canadian and I’m shocked that Alex Matthews is so low. She’s a top 5 for me.

Top ten (I’m guessing), in no particular order: R Demant, K Olson-Baker, Z Aldcroft, M Jones, H Rogers, S de Goede, A Tessier, P Bourdon-Sansus, A. Wafer, A du Plessis.

I’m surely forgetting someone great.

C
Chris929 118 days ago

England always get hard done by in these lists. won 55 of last 56 tests and 1 or 2 players in a top 10. If stacey waaka can get picked in list then expect to see portia woodman picked. Wafers good and may be great but shes not yet done enough to be a top 10 player. Personally I dont rate demant that much-far better nz players. De goede has hardly played for 18 months-so you basing it on old form(shes my number 1 when fully fit closely followed by aldcroft at 2). amy du plessis wont be there as shes not even first choice for NZ with brunt/waaka in centres. Tessier not been as good in 2025 as she was in 2024.

C
Chris929 118 days ago

Cant say I agree with much of this list-just seems a random list of names in no particular order. As usual the womens rugby media always tries to be too inclusive and ends up making lists like these a pointless exercise.

K
KL 118 days ago

Seriously? This list is comprised of players from about six countries. I doubt anyone from Spain or Wales makes it (Pena and Callendar could easily), let alone Japan or South Africa.

B
BC1812 118 days ago

Yes, I don’t agree with much of it so far. Is this a 7s list or one for real XVs rugby?

J
JT 118 days ago

Yeah, putting Evie G at #37 after being shortlisted as the player of the tournament at the W6N this year makes this list questionable. Who even is going to be in the top 10?

J
JT 119 days ago

If Stacey can make it to the top 3 with just three 15s matches this year (one of them is a trial match), then Jorja Miller being in the top 10 is not impossible at all.

I
IT 110 days ago

The way this world cup is drawn up we should see any of The Black Ferns / France playing England / Canada in the final. Miller is a fine player, but I have my doubts that she will be as impactful against any of those teams.

K
KL 118 days ago

I doubt Miller gets in. I also expect that would change if this list was done post-RWC.

J
JT 120 days ago

I better see Kaipo Olsen-Baker in the top 10

B
BC1812 120 days ago

Well, at least 15 of the next 30 will have to be Red Roses, but then only one Frenchwomen has been named so far and only 2 Canadians. Have a feeling that this list is going to be controversial.

L
LR 121 days ago

Women of colour, where you at?

T
Tschudi85 120 days ago

In the top 40! Just check out the Irish side. They have a prolific prop from Cameroon 🇨🇲 🏉 🇮🇪

C
CN 121 days ago

Surprised to see Kelter as low as 43, she is star quality. I can only imagine how the rest of the list will shape up, such ranking is always a challenge.

Maybe they deduct points based on how many times you've deliberately attempted to stamp on another players head?

Choosing the Best Women’s Rugby Players

As there are so many stars in the women's game right now, and as the world's top teams descend on England for the Women's World Cup, who the best players are is of course a huge talking point, and as such, picking the 50 has to be carefully considered.

There are many different factors to take into account, from hard-built reputations that stem from years of service, to individual leadership qualities, unmatched talent, pure athletic ability and much more - in other words, it's not a simple task.

This is why we've turned to our global panel of expert journalists, who after much discussion, analysis and evaluation have curated and agreed the list for the current Top 50 women's rugby players in the world. These include: Lucy Lomax, Imogen Ainsworth, Finn Morton, Ned Lester, Franscisco Isaac, Willy Billiard and Joe Harvey.

Have your say on RugbyPass’ Top 50 Women’s Rugby Players

We know there'll be disagreements and alternatives to what we've come up with, but it goes without saying, this isn't a closed debate but an invitation to converse and celebrate the players that make up the game we love.

We should add there are a few caveats as to who is eligible for the rankings:

  • Players on the list must have played international 15s rugby this calendar year

  • Players who are currently injured have been included

  • Off-field influence has not been taken into consideration for this list, sorry Ilona. (Please see our honourable mentions list!)
