The history of the German rugby team dates back to the 1900s. In fact, the team claimed the silver medal at the 1900 Olympics. However, Germany was actually represented by SC 1880 Frankfurt, rather than an official German national team.

Following this, the German national team played their first official international against France on 17 April 1927 in Paris. Sadly, they lost 30-5.

Despite losing their first ever international, the German rugby team quickly established itself as the second best in continental Europe. In fact, they didn’t lose to another European nation until 1937, when they were defeated 9-7 by Italy. That said, because Germany didn’t play in the Home Nations Championship (the precursor to the modern Six Nations), it is difficult to accurately assess the strength of the German team from this period.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of World War Two caused the sport of rugby union in Germany to halt. The side only played one match during the war and almost all of their starting XV were casualties of the war.

Due to this, Germany was a much weaker side post-World War Two. They played in their first post-war international in 1952, but did not play a competitive match again until 1965.

At this point, the team became part of the second tier of FIRA Rugby (effectively Europe’s third tier). A decade later, they played their first international against a non-European nation, beating Morocco in Hannover.

Since German reunification in 1991, the team has largely played in either the second or third division of European rugby. The team now competes in the Rugby Europe Championship. In the modern era, they’ve notched impressive wins against the likes of Portugal, Uruguay and Spain
