Rugby Sevens Olympics History
Rugby union, with 15 players per side, was introduced to the Olympics in 1900. The hosts, France, claimed rugby’s first gold medal while Germany sealed silver and Great Britain took bronze. After a successful debut, rugby was also contested at the 1908, 1920 and 1924 Olympics.
Following a 92-year hiatus, rugby returned to the Olympic stage at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The sport was reinstated as rugby sevens, featuring squads of no more than 12 players. The first winners were Fiji (men’s) and Australia (women’s). Following this, at the 2020 Olympics, the Fiji men’s team retained their title, while New Zealand won the women’s competition.
Fast-forward to 2024 and the sport once again featured at the Paris Olympics. This time, Fiji (men) were beaten by home favourites, France, in the final. A spirited France side, led by the legendary Antoine Dupont, cruised to a 28-7 victory in the final and claimed the gold medal in the process. In the women’s tournament, New Zealand retained their crown.
