Rugby League player suffers gruesome knee dislocation

Fans from both codes were shocked by a gruesome injury during a Super League contest between Hull FC and Hull KR.

The match saw back-rower Joe Westerman dislocate his kneecap while being tackled, but instead of succumbing to the pain, he simply banged it back into place and continued playing.

This has caused quite a reaction from players in both codes on social media. This is the footage, and be warned, it is grim:

Rugby league has long held the view that union is the softer form of the game, and on this particular occasion, it is hard to argue with that.

Boks need more depth: 5 things on South Africa's Christmas wishlist

The only observation I would have is how quickly things improved once Wiese & DDA returned. The attack flourished with Wiese having probably his best season in a Bok shirt and the defence shut most teams out once DDA returned at 12.

The only games the Boks didn’t look themselves were when these two were missing at the start, which are the only obvious gaps.

JL du Preez was unlucky with the injury but he will likely shine in that UBB team this season. I also think Dan du Preez has a chance, he and Wisese were very similar when they were both in the Premiership.

Dan Du Preez has been consistently better than Augustus during his stint at Northampton, so I wouldn’t rule him out so quickly.

I think you may see Dan Du Preez start to make the squad next year, as he has much better handling skills than JL and is very close to Wisese.

It wouldn’t surprise me if you see both him & Hanekom being given their opportunity next season.

I think FRA gave ENG an awful lot of help last year, as those 4 dropped final passes when clean through could have been very different on another day and the silly SCO penalty picking Ben Curry up and then throwing him to the ground (rather than placing him down) was a silly penalty to give away that ultimately cost them the game.

. . . . But ENG have taken another 1 or 2 steps forward since then, so I think it has become more about what they do with the ball this year, rather than relying on the opposition to allow them back in the game.

You may want to watch the game again JW.

I’m not sure why you would think they had ENG’s number in that game, ENG looked pretty comfortable throughout and the ENG stats were almost identical to the AUS game (which they also won comfortably this year), so looks like they did the same job on both sides this Autumn.

It’s the muddled thinking of taking one of the best post metre carriers in World Rugby (Leicester Faingaʻanuku) and playing him on the left wing against a team that have a massive game plan around tactical kicking to contest through their wingers (which isn’t his strength), who have transformed their defence by playing a 5x7 strategy with 2x7’s to maintain their full 80 min intensity, so you refuse to move from 5|3 and bring on ALB (who is just returning from injury) and expect him to change the game.

That for me showed how disjointed and muddled decision making that is currently prevalent within the AB’s coaching set up. I honestly don’t get it and don’t think any other top team would make a call like that.

ENG changed 3 coaches and about 3 or 4 players across their 23 and went from a team that were competitive for 60 mins to a team that could compete for the full 80.

I think NZ will be in need of the same ball park but whilst ENG have had to wait for the players to emerge (Pollock, Pepper, Calouri), I actually think AB’s have them available and is about putting them together and finding the right balance and confidence but I think the first conversations need to be about bench strategy and moving to 6|2 will be a good start.

That’s a fair question JW and I think the alarm bells were raised in 2017 but what you really saw was a change in the defensive structures, with SA & ENG leading the way in 2019 (with very big forward packs) and with the dominance of SA from 2019, everyone followed suit by supersizing the props (where De Groot & Lomax emerged) and then we saw the return of the large 6.

Since that point, defence has really tightened up and you either beat it with speed and movement (as JS tried) or you match it with power (like FRA 2023).

I think the balance has been off during 2025 CW but there has been a bot more psychological damage since Wellington.

I do think there are some players that bring great energy off the bench and I think Williams/Taukei'aho/Newell were a very good replacement bench unit, which have been missed. I also think Tuipulotu off the bench adds something (who has been a big loss) and then if you went 6|2 it would give more options for Sititi/Vaa’i or Sittiti/Kirifi for the final 4Q.

I think that’s the heart of the issue -a fit De Groot & Lomax are the best starters and Williams & Newell are better finishers.

I also think a 6|2 bench strategy will help maintain the energy levels and help with the H2 drop off the AB’s have suffered from this season.

The Summer & Autumn 24 AB’s pack had ENG’s number in all 3 games.

I think people have forgotten how destructive Newell was as a replacement THP last year and how destructive those final 20 mins of scrums were but he has not been as impactful as a starter (hence the Lomax comments).
