Former England centre's message to fans as he switches codes

Luther Burrell

Former England international Luther Burrell has sent a message on Twitter to all involved with Northampton Saints, after playing his final game for them last weekend.

The 31-year-old is set to cross codes to rugby league, joining Super League outfit Warrington Wolves, bringing to an end “one hell of a journey” at Northampton over the past seven years.

The 15-cap international shared this:

The powerful centre joined the Saints in 2012, winning the Premiership with them in 2014, and making his England debut that same season. However, he was infamously omitted from Stuart Lancaster’s 2015 World Cup squad in favour of rugby league icon Sam Burgess.

An interesting twist to this move by Burrell is that he could once again line up alongside Burgess for England Rugby League.

While Burrell thanked Northampton for his time with them, this appears to be a new challenge that he is looking forward to. He has encouraged fans to watch league over the summer, after his rarely seen move. The conversion from union to league does not often happen, and some will hope that this is a landmark deal that will encourage others to do the same.

The former Saint played for Huddersfield Giants in his youth, meaning he has some experience of league before joining the Wolves. He will team up with them at the beginning of July, and he will hope to aid their current campaign where they sit second in the Super League table and are in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Unfortunately for the 17 stone centre, his Northampton career did not end as well as he would have wanted, as they succumbed to a semi-final loss to Exeter last weekend, after doing remarkably well to make the playoffs.
But for now Burrell has thanked a club that he has been a great servant to, playing over 150 games and achieving a lot.
