    James Ryan Bio

Born 24 July 1996, James Ryan was granted a place in the Leinster Academy for the 2016-17 season. Despite suffering badly from injuries and only completing one out of three academy years, he was handed a full senior contract ahead of the 2017-18 season.

James Ryan made his competitive debut for Leinster on 2 September 2017 in a match against the Dragons. He’s stayed with the side ever since, making almost 100 appearances in this time. During this period, he has won four Pro14 titles, a United Rugby Championship title and a European Rugby Champions Cup. Added to this, he was also voted as the IRUPA Players’ Player of the Year in 2019.

Unusually, James Ryan actually made his Ireland debut before he played for Leinster. He made his first appearance for his country in June 2017, three months before he first ran out for Leinster. Since, he’s been a near ever-present for Ireland. He’s earned more than 70 caps and won three Six Nations Championships, including two Grand Slams

Thanks to his form for Leinster and Ireland, James Ryan was selected in the British and Irish Lions squad for the team’s 2025 tour of Australia. On the tour, he appeared in two tests as the Lions claimed a 2-1 series victory.

With many years of elite rugby ahead of him, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for James Ryan.
