'You've got more context now': Eben Etzebeth speaks out with 404-word message

South Africa lock has taken to social media to “owe everyone an explanation” after receiving a 12-week ban for gouging.

The 34-year-old was slapped with the ban last week for gouging Wales flanker Alex Mann during a scuffle in the final minutes of South Africa’s 73-0 at the Principality Stadium in November.

Etzebeth received the first red card of his career for the incident, and accepted that he was guilty in a post on Instagram, but provided some context to the incident in a 404-word message.

In the post, the double World Cup winner explained how he did not intend to make contact with the eyes of Mann, but the dynamics of the brawl resulted in the red card incident.

Though he provided some context, Etzebeth said he deserves the suspension, and vowed he will not be red carded again.

“Hey Everyone,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve been quiet, but now that my hearing is done I think I owe everyone an explanation

“First of all, this is not a post to show that I was not guilty, I accept guilt. I made a mistake and I’m willing to serve a suspension which I deserve.

“I don’t want young kids who look up to the Springboks to think that it’s OK to eye gouge someone, because it’s not, but unfortunately mistakes happen and I made a big one for which I’m sorry.

“But I’d like to answer the question – why did you do such a thing?

“It was a mistake caused by my reaction and other factors that played a role.

Slide 1: The scuffle was basically over when Wales #7 struck me with an open hand to my chin/neck area, you can see me looking at the Assistant Referee and waiting for a reaction from him (it happened fast and it’s understandable that he didn’t see it) without reacting yet, I got another pull on my jersey, before I go in with the similar type of action.

“Slide 2: You can clearly see my first point of contact is against his shoulder with an open hand, just like he did, except he got me on the chin. Another thing worth mentioning, when he struck me, I was standing still with not a lot of movement or players trying to get involved. When I went for the same open hand towards his shoulder, you’ll see 2 Welsh players changing the dynamic of the entire picture as well as one of my teammates pulling Wales #7 around his neck away from my hand and where my force is going.

“Slide 3: Another Camera Angle

“So why did I post this? To try and show people how everything happened and that it was never intentional. I would never do something like this on purpose, I know what the consequences will be after playing rugby for a few years.

“Thanks to everyone that stood by me and thought the best of me. I’m sorry for letting you and the game down. That was my first red card since I started playing. I want it to be my last.

“To the people that were angry and upset with my actions, I understand – because it didn’t look good on the slow motion replay and hopefully you’ve got a bit more context now.”

Eben the gouger strikes

R

This is a non event, all this fuss is because people just cant stand that the Springboks are so good. Eben has 140 something caps and this is his first red and this is despite being an “enforcer”. 140+ caps, try and process that!

The welsh wussy seemed perfectly okay to me? So cant have been a “gouge” in the true sense of the word (to make a hole or dent), just a push, regardless of how it happened!

This is Rugby not tiddlywinks! Get a life, move on for Gods sake!

It is so obvious from every video and image that he repeatedly and deliberately went for his eyes.

Translation:

“I truly believed that I could do whatever I want on the field without consequences because of my reputation. I thought I was in the same league as Owen Farrell and Johnny Sexton, but I found out the hard way that I’m not. Following the multiple occasions referees have completely ignored my actions while giving away game defining penalties, I assumed they would do the same on this occasion. It is deeply unfair that I am not allowed to eye gouge someone in retaliation to them pushing me. Do they not know who I am?”

Sexton and Farrell have received bans for their (relatively minor) infractions. Not sure what you are implying with them.

Eben has one good point. Everything looks worse in slow motion.

However.

You’re either guilty, or you’re not. Don’t plead guilty, then try to justify it as an accident.

Don’t say sorry for eye gouging, then try to justify it as unintentional.

It’s one or the other.

Own up to it. Or fight for your innocence. Anything else is a massive cop out.

“I don’t want the kids to think it’s ok to eye gouge, its not….but….”

He deliberately eye gouged a player, swore to Kolisi and co afterwards it was accidental and now keeps up the ruse “For the kids..”.

Pretty pitiful stuff, hoped for better to be honest.

Moving on…

‘Sorry, heat of the moment, rush of blood, not intentional’. That’s all it needs to be. This does, unfortunately, read like an attempt to justify.

Imagine if Curry released something similar re the Contepomi incident to stop speculation? The man would be ripped to shreds.

J
JW 45 days ago

I think the reason he’s been ripped to shreds is precisely because he hasn’t done such a thing JD.

In general I think having to keep their trap shut in the face of the court of public opinion hurts their hearings.

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

That’s pretty much what he says in 405 words.

JW 45 days ago

Don’t worry Eben, I think most rugby fans knew.

You just gotta accept sometimes you get beat and that continuing to try and get the best of him when been outplayed is a bit desperate and not a good look for the Springbok aura.

Only the ABs have an Aura

Eben. You need a better publicist.

fl 45 days ago

He needs to not deliberately eye-gouge!

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

I honestly thought we couldn’t ventilate this any more.

Round two of hysterics incoming…

You live here, don’t you?

Any statement with a ‘but’ in it is not an apology. It’s an excuse.

Personally, I think it is bringing the game into disrepute - I’d ban him further for it.

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

Why don’t we imprison him? Perhaps we can arrange a public lynching to satisfy you?

L
Leo Maywood 45 days ago

Man up Eben. This is no apology. This is you saying sorry but still trying to say it wasn’t all you with added slides and bla bla bla.

Here is what Bakkies Botha said on the same day he got suspended for 9 weeks for his headbutt on Jimmy Cowan.

“I apologise to Jimmy Cowan and the New Zealand rugby public for what happened. Rugby is a physical sport but it has to be played within the boundaries and spirit of the law. I truly regret my actions and will make sure I put the extended time away from the game to positive use and return to playing with the right attitude”.

This is how you do it.

What you just put out is a joke. Only Saffas will believe this apology of yours. Sies man.

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

I don’t buy it for one minute. He’s a failure in my eyes. He can’t even dislodge an eyeball with his thumb. So much for being strong.

T
TokoRFC 45 days ago

Not good enough.

World rugby requires a mandatory 400 word limit to apologies thankyou very much Mr Etzebeth 😉

GrahamVF 45 days ago

😉 Aside from your post I just love the schadenfreude oozing from post to post. Most satisfying.
