Watch: Late Tackle - Sevens Fever

The World Sevens Series makes its way to Cape Town and the Late Tackle team are so excited that they are giving away tickets to watch the fastest form of the game live!

 

In the spirit of Sevens, former England Sevens player Mat Turner joins the team on the couch to share some interesting behind-the-scenes stories – what happens in Vegas, ends up on Late Tackle.

It does look that way . . . but if I were on the interview board, I would be asking some difficult questions regarding these behaviours before approving his appointment..

He’s got the rugby IQ and talent, that’s not in doubt but does he have the EQ and emotional control for another step up under greater pressure? Will his outbursts damage the brand, sponsors etc? How will he respond under extreme pressure? He’s starting to create doubts with each one of these things, which just need to stop as he’s hurting his own reputation and brand rather than anything else.

There is a lot to be said for treating the scrum the same way as a maul as it loses structure - simple ask the defending side to regroup behind the last foot as the scrum spins around or movess forwards.

There’s a lot of truth in this and it’s worth rewatching the first quarter of the UBB-Northampton game to see how refs get ‘over-influenced’ to give pens and then yellows… Most of those early scrums should simply have been reset as the front rows popped out or up, or the ball played away.

He’s been very good at Bath the last 2 seasons but with Van Wyk at 35, Du Toit leaving (was 2nd option at LHP) and Obano hitting his 30’s, they need a younger LHP coming through to share the duties with Obano and manage the long term LHP succession.

Makes sense to have the stronger pure scrummager come on and wreak carnage, but they are also diff shapes and techs, which makes it hard for the LHPs opposite to adjust.

He may become so but we haven’t seen him at THP in any Tests yet, Porter is a proven Lions level prop at both spots.
