Haha you maybe right. All I remember is that Jordan was considered a high ball expert then. When it was only about athleticism, jumping high and being able to grab it unconstested.

I think we have some better 15 options in the wings (figuratively) for a back up but yes that would be my only worry, you’d lose that electric incision dynamic that Dmac or Smith, even Furbank, provides which seems pretty key for this attack.

I just loved seeing Rassie rattled by Rennie's use of the media. Did you notice the moment when the master communicator realised what he'd done, at the end of his rant? “I apologise if I say things in the wrong way sometimes, I'm not great at that”😂😂😂

As you say, all this only adds to the occasion. The world's best coach and team pulling out all the stops to match their highly effective challengers. Not since the 60 minutes video nasty has he felt the need to go so far beyond the accepted boundaries of rugby sportsmanship, in this case the illegal swapping of front rows.

Pretty vanilla yup, he overlooks that ABs must have put up nearly half a dozen contestables and won them all.

He’s right in that they tried to be too smart and catch the wingers out, when they really should have just passed it wide and forced the wingers up first, or just kicked it out and contested an easy lineout. He doesn’t seem to realise why it looked bad, just that he knows what they did didn’t seem to work.

Springboks hold firm against All Blacks fightback to level series

That’s why I remain fairly optimistic about Test 3, because as you point out, the All Blacks have a lot of things to improve on and they’re not that far off. Rennie will need to take a few more risks with his team selection. If we go with the same forwards three times in a row, I’m afraid the Boks washing machine will wring the All Blacks out.

The only immense thing about Kriel was the distance he missed Carter by with his pathetic tackle attempt as Carter completely skinned him!

Don’t you just crave the Boks being able to actually construct a backline try?

I agree with much of your comment, but cannot disagree more with the idea that high balls weren't a thing back then.

I also think Jordie might be too good to leave out the starting 15. Personally I'd start him at 15 and if more impact is needed in attack you can move him to 12 and bring on MacKenzie or Love at 15.

He is having more impact now he is in his prime than when he was a relatively inexperienced youngster. That doesn't necessarily indicate much about whether his positional shift was wise or not.

And I just think you're wrong. His impact now is getting his hands on the ball. Great, but the ABs have loads of people that can do that. His impact back then was winning aerial contests, which is now an area that keeps losing games for NZ.

Why Peter Lakai could be the All Blacks' ace up the sleeve for the third Test

Rennie will need to be more adventurous for Test 3. This series is winnable in South Africa, and Test 2 only reinforced that belief for me. But if he picks the same team, or virtually the same team, it won’t work. The All Blacks will lose by a few points, but they will lose.

Aumua, Newell, Darry, Lakai, and possibly even Blackadder need to be brought in. And we should have Rieko and potentially Tavatavanawai on the bench.

No, he stopped playing 15 because neither he, nor his coaches, nor his fans, had a proper appreciation of the skills required to play 15. No other national side on earth, except possibly France, would have sanctioned moving him out of the backfield.

Expect the didn’t, they easily covered the kicks with normal positioning. They should have just kicked out on the full and stolen the lineouts.

It’s essentially like trying to kick the length of the field. You have have all the best intentions but you also have to be realistic. Smart.
