Wallabies target five-year first amid ‘pretty special’ winning run

It’s been almost five years exactly since the Wallabies last tasted victory in five straight Tests, but the men in gold have a chance to bring up that feat in just a matter of days, when they take the field at Mendoza’s Estadio Malvinas Argentinas.

Joe Schmidt bowed out as Wallabies head coach with a 57-10 demolition of Italy, before Les Kiss led the side to a 3-0 run after stepping into the top job. The Wallabies beat Japan twice, before prevailing 27-21 in a tense clash with Los Pumas last weekend in Jujuy.

The Wallabies were defeated in 10 of their 15 Tests last season, but the national team has shown clear signs of growth already in 2026. They now have a chance to do something not seen since 2021, as they look to keep the good times rolling with another win.

Dave Rennie was coaching the Wallabies when the men in gold won five on the bounce between September 12, 2021, and October 23. Four of those five Tests were played on Australian soil, including back-to-back victories against the Springboks.

With Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 now less than 13 months away, the Wallabies want to keep building confidence and racking up wins throughout the rest of another mammoth international season, with eight matches left before the New Year.

“Everyone wants to be in a winning changeroom after a Test match. To do it four times in a row now is pretty special,” Wallabies winger Max Jorgensen told reporters.

“We’re not focusing on that too much. Obviously winning Test rugby is what you want but that’s all in the past now. We’re focusing on this week ahead against Argentina and looking to make it five in a row.

The World Cup is going to be massive and I think everyone has it in the back of their mind, just sitting there,” he added.

“We look forward a little bit but not too much. We know that a lot of these games here will help us build into that World Cup next year. It’s finding that balance.

“We’ve got a task at hand and that’s to beat Argentina this week but we know all those games late this year and early next year will be a good test for us and build confidence into the World Cup next year.”

Kiss remains unbeaten as Wallabies head coach, with the national team securing three wins from as many Tests so far. It’s the same record the Aussies began with under former boss Schmidt, who claimed back-to-back victories against Wales and another over Georgia.

But to keep that run alive, the Wallabies will have to do something they’ve never done before in Argentina. The Wallabies have gone 1-0 up in a multi-Test series away to Los Pumas three times before, but the hosts have always bounced back in the second meeting.

There is some history that favours the visitors ahead of Kiss’ fourth match in charge though, with the Wallabies 3-1 all-time against Los Pumas at the Mendoza venue, including three on the bounce dating back to July 2015.

“Les has been great since he’s come in. Everyone knows he’s a world-class coach and he’s obviously won his first here games which has been amazing,” Jorgensen said.

“He’s changed a little bit, made it his own, but the base was already there from what Joe [Schmidt] built over the last two years.

“But he definitely has made it his own and brought his expertise into the group and has really been driving that.”
