Wallabies suffer injury blow as Gordon setback confirmed ahead of Springboks

Australia fly-half Carter Gordon has suffered a fractured fibula just days out from his wedding to long-term partner Abbey Lewis, with the Wallabies confirming the injury update on social media after the dramatic 28-all draw with Los Pumas.

As first reported by Nine’s World of Sports on Monday, Gordon and Lewis are set to be wed after Australia’s two Tests away to Argentina. The now 13-Test Wallaby started the first match in Jujuy before shifting to the bench for the shot at history at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas.

The Wallabies had never won a Test series against Los Pumas in Argentina, but gave themselves a chance of achieving that feat after winning the first contest 27-21, while also maintaining their unbeaten run under new boss Les Kiss.

But Gordon didn’t see out the match after coming on for a second time as a replacement, going off with about 11 minutes left. Coach Kiss told reporters post-game that Gordon would hopefully get scans on the lower leg injury “over the next few hours.”

The Wallabies have now confirmed that Gordon has suffered a fractured fibula, but has since returned to Australia to begin his recovery. Nine reported that Gordon is expected to be sidelined for up to two months, although no official timeline has been given by the Wallabies.

It’s another tough injury blow for Gordon, who has only played more than 60 minutes once for the Wallabies since returning from the NRL last year. The No. 10 has previously picked up injuries against Italy last November and in the defeat to Ireland a couple of months ago.

The Wallabies have about three weeks between now and their next Test, which is against the two-time defending Rugby World Cup winners the Springboks. It’ll be played at Perth’s Optus Stadium on September 27.

Kiss remains unbeaten in the Wallabies top charge, with a record of three wins and one draw from matches against the Brave Blossoms and Los Pumas. The Wallabies have won one of their last two against the Springboks, including a famous win in Johannesburg in August 2025.

“I was just talking to the coaches earlier, just having a debrief. We feel that some of the decisions we’ve made over this four or five weeks, we got a lot of good information from it,” Kiss told reporters after the draw with Los Pumas.

“It was important that this whole group knew that we were going to back them. They knew that we were going to challenge them in many different ways, and I think we’ve done that for the group.

“We’ll get a lot of pay from that down the road. We’re certainly going to be doing what we can over the next two, three weeks to go prepare well for the Springboks.

“We know that we’re playing the number one nation in the world… we’re going to have to make sure we get some things better to be able to front up against the Springboks. It will be tough, but I’m pretty sure the boys will be up for the fight.”
