Wallabies flyer Max Jorgensen keeps door open for Olympic sevens move

Wallabies flyer Max Jorgensen is leaving the door open for a future switch to rugby sevens in a bid to play at the 2028 LA Olympics, having just signed a historic five-year contract extension with Rugby Australia and the NSW Waratahs.

Jorgensen, 21, has become just the third Wallaby to ink such a deal of that length with the sport’s governing body in Australia, joining four-time John Eales Medallist Michael Hooper and code-hopper Lote Tuqiri in that exclusive club.

While the rumour mill has been in full swing over recent weeks, yet again linking Jorgensen with a potential move to NRL powerhouse the Sydney Roosters, the outside back has committed to rugby with the chance to take up sabbaticals in 2028 and 2030.

With an opportunity for something a bit different in 2028, Jorgensen didn’t rule out a switch to sevens in time for the LA Games, which would see him follow in the footsteps of some genuine rugby union greats.

Sonny Bill Williams and Antoine Dupont are some world-renowned 15s players who have become Olympians with sevens. Wallabies winger Mark Nawaqanitawase enjoyed a stint in the sport for the Paris Games in 2024 before switching codes.

“100 per cent, it’s not off the table. I have so much respect for those guys and what they do over there in the sevens program,” Jorgensen told reporters in Sydney.

“It would be very cool to play in the Olympics so it’s not off the table but as I said before, it’s sort of a conversation for a later date.”

Jorgensen captured headlines the world over with a stunning match-winner away to England at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium in 2024, flying down the left sideline in the 84th minute, before swan diving the Wallabies to victory 42-37.

That was a highlight moment in Jorgensen’s debut season in Wallaby gold, before the speedster took things to an all-new level in the Test arena last year. Jorgensen was among the standouts during the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions.

The rising star scored the Wallabies’ first try of the series at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium and continued to perform in Tests two and three. Jorgensen later got on the scoresheet against the Springboks, as the Wallabies completed a famous comeback win in Johannesburg.

2025 was a breakout season for Jorgensen as an international, with the Wallaby recognised in the RugbyPass Top 100 for the first time. With the new Super Rugby Pacific season only a couple of weeks away, any rumours regarding Jorgensen’s future have been put to bed.

“A massive weight off the shoulders. It’s been going on for a little while now so it’s good to get it finally done and ready before the season starts,” Jorgensen explained. “Just focused on my footy for this year.

“I love the Waratahs, love the Wallabies and love footy that we’re playing at the moment and I couldn’t really see myself playing anywhere else.”
