Wallabies fly-half set for scans after injury in nail-biting draw

Wallabies coach Les Kiss has provided a brief injury update on Carter Gordon, who was replaced during the 28-all draw with Los Pumas in Mendoza. The now 13-Test Wallaby came off the bench twice, including a final substitution with about 11 minutes left.

Gordon strung a couple of starts together against Japan’s Brave Blossoms in Townsville and the first clash with Los Pumas, before shifting to the bench for the second Flight Centre Series Test on Saturday.

The 25-year-old spent 15 minutes out in the middle during the first half while winger Filipo Daugunu received a HIA, before returning to the bench. Gordon would later come on for a second time, replacing Ben Donaldson in the 55^th minute.

But scrum-half Ryan Lonergan would end up finishing the match in that No. 10 role after Gordon was substituted 14 minutes later. Kiss revealed post-game the fly-half will get some scans after contract on the lower leg.

“We’re just going to get that checked out properly with some scans hopefully over the next few hours,” Kiss told reporters.

“Hopefully we’ve got some information in the morning.”

It remains unclear at this stage whether Gordon will be available to face the Springboks in a few weeks’ time, with that match scheduled for September 27 in Perth. The Wallabies will then play the All Blacks in two Bledisloe Cup Tests.

Kiss’ Wallabies can take plenty of confidence into those matches against the world’s top two sides, amid a five-game unbeaten run. The Wallabies defeated Italy, Japan twice and Argentina once, before being held to a draw in Mendoza.

The Aussies will now return home, getting the chance to reconnect with friends and family before preparation amps up for the Boks, who are currently 2-1 in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Test series.

South Africa head to Baltimore, the USA, next for the fourth and final match against New Zealand. They will then have a couple of weeks between facing the All Blacks and Wallabies, with Perth’s Optus Stadium hosting that fixture.

“I was just talking to the coaches earlier, just having a debrief. We feel that some of the decisions we’ve made over this four or five weeks, we got a lot of good information from it,” Kiss said.

“It was important that this whole group knew that we were going to back them. They knew that we were going to challenge them in many different ways, and I think we’ve done that for the group.

“We’ll get a lot of pay from that down the road. We’re certainly going to be doing what we can over the next two, three weeks to go prepare well for the Springboks.

“We know that we’re playing the number one nation in the world… we’re going to have to make sure we get some things better to be able to front up against the Springboks. It will be tough, but I’m pretty sure the boys will be up for the fight.”
