South Africa hooker Malcolm Marx has been named the World Rugby player of the year.

The 31-year-old beat compatriots Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ox Nche to the award, as well as France’s Louis Bielle Biarrey.

The double World Cup winner has become the first hooker to be crowned player of the year since Keith Wood won the inaugural award in 2001.

With one match to go against Wales next week, Marx has started in 11 of South Africa’s 13 Tests so far this year, scoring five tries to take his tally to 27 tries in international rugby.

The hooker played a starring role in the Springboks’ biggest victories this year, starting in the 43-10 win over the All Blacks in Wellington, and producing one of the performances of the year against France in the 32-17 win at the Stade de France.

Marx was at the fore yet again as South Africa defeated Ireland 24-13 at the Aviva Stadium, being named the player of the match shortly before he was given the accolade.

This award only emphasises what a dominant force the Boks are on the world stage, with the gong remaining in South Africa after Du Toit took home the honour last year.

“On behalf of SA Rugby, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Malcolm,” said President of SA Rugby Mr Mark Alexander. “His work ethic is simply unbelievable and he embodies everything we value in a Springbok – resilience, commitment and character. This award is a fitting recognition of his contribution to our team and to the sport of rugby.”

“To have three of the four nominees for World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year and a Breakthrough Player nominee from our country is a testament to the class of this team. We are immensely proud of them all.”

OK, so you think every player on a winning team is always better than every player on a losing team?

I guess when World Rugby announce the dream team on Tuesday it will feature 15 south africans. Any less and that will prove their bias! Every player on every other team is a donkey.

Don’t know who the commentator on TNT was but he said that Marx is playing most of his rugby from the bench. What a muppet…

Poms don’t know anything outside of their orbit. Same people who think Itoje is a shoe in for a world XV.

Has deserved it all year and been at the heart of the Boks charge in key games.

👏👏👏

Deserved it for the France game alone.

Model of consistency.

You can’t be a model of consistency in one game alone.

Out of a slightly odd lineup, this is probably deserved. I might have favoured LBB but these were the two frontrunners.

SFM, Itoje, & Ardie Savea should all have been in contention though. Possibly George Ford too.

What did Itoje do of any great note? Plenty of genuflecting to a lightweight.

Sheehan outscored LBB on the try front!

Ford wasn't starting for some of the important wins in the 6N. Itoje has transition to captain really well but isn't the absolute game winning player that others are.

England's team performances have been good but there isnt a single player who has stood out in so many games. Curry would be my top pick especially with the Lions, but wouldn't swap any of those on the list for him.

Always a tough thing to pick but happy for Marx been outstanding for years.

Itoje and Ford not even close to the conversation.

Well deserved. He’s been outstanding in each game ever since the 2 games in NZ.

Feel for Nche, as I’m sure he would have won, had he not missed this November series

If Nché retires without winning the world player of the year he can feel hard done by, but I really don’t see how this could be his year. Which were his standout games in 2025?
