Three All Black XV players join Scott Robertson's squad for England

The All Blacks are now two from two on their end-of-year Grand Slam tour after two victories against Ireland in Chicago and Scotland in Edinburgh, respectively.

But it’s not all rosy for Scott Robertson’s side, with the All Blacks today announcing two Chiefs loose forwards have headed home to New Zealand, and won’t play any further part in the tour.

Samipeni Finau has headed home due to illness in the family, and Luke Jacobson will return to New Zealand after a head knock in the All Blacks XV game against England A last weekend.

With that unfortunate news for those two players comes an opportunity for others to impress Robertson and co, with only two games remaining in the 2025 international season.

Robertson and his coaching staff have drafted in three players as training cover for the game this weekend against England, all from Jamie Joseph’s All Blacks XV squad.

Crusaders loose-forward Christian Lio-Willie will come in as loose-forward cover for the week, while Josh Beehre will also join the squad in London, like he did last week before the Scotland game at Murrayfield.

Exciting young Highlanders winger Caleb Tangitau is the last of the three to be drafted into the squad this week, after impressing in the first two games on tour with Joseph’s side.

The 22-year-old has already scored a couple of tries for the All Blacks XV this season, after having a superb try-scoring season with the Dunedin-based franchise in 2025.

Robertson’s side is likely to regain the services of their captain Scott Barrett, who missed last weekend’s encounter against Scotland with a leg laceration, but is also without Blues winger Caleb Clarke, who failed an HIA at Murrayfield and is on a 12-day stand-down period.

Barrett’s return could see in-form Chiefs lock Josh Lord return to the bench, while Clarke’s absence gives Robertson the chance to make some positional shifts in the backline, or move either Sevu Reece or Rieko Ioane in as specialist wingers.

Let’s be honest, Sevu Reece and Reiko Ione aren’t exactly poor quality replacements.

Besides playing SA in a knockout WC it be hard to find a high pressure test than England at Twickenham esp after their 8 match winning streak full of confidence and some seriously class athletes Bothwick has them primed has named a team to go at us and just as important a 6-2 bench with a license to make it a sh.t fight for this reason I hope Razor gives the 11 jersey to the 87 test big game player Reiko a game of this magnitude he is no stranger and has never personally let the jersey down .. facts

Injuries force changes. Go Caleb Tangitau, show ‘em you belong there

Please not sevu. Slowest winger in the world by a mile. Tangitau for me straight swap for Clarke. Leave the midfield as is.

It potentially means Rueben Love might get a chance this week. Another quality replacement that hasn’t really had a chance to shine this tour.

There’s almost zero chance these cautious selectors will start Tangitau for this match. He should have been in the squad though, instead of either Sevu or Ioane, both who are on the downward slope of their respective careers.

Sevu Reece had his opportunity and failed. 100% agree Tangitau should be straight in there

It’s been a long injury ridden season for the ABs I am hoping they have one big performance left for an improving England, but they may struggle. Ironically injury sometimes freshens players up like Roigard and maybe Scooter Barrett. It also forces rotation so Tupea and Lester are still quite fresh. In the forwards the front row bench players may just be rotated or join the game earlier. We will see!

Unleash Tangitau

What’s he like under the high ball, Highlanders/Auckland fans? If he’s good there then play him I reckon, we know Ioane and Reece will get punished.

Do what the All Blacks of old would do, play our most electric back three and say: “kick it to us if you dare.”

I think Finau and Jacobsen were both lucky to be picked in the AB’s. Ethan Blackadder gets ridiculed by some people when he has been injured.Ethan as he showed in this years Super Rugby winning Crusaders is better than either. He has been , ( obviously ), named in Crusaders 2026 squad and will bounce back from his NPC injury set back.

Yeah what was Ethans NPC form like.. oh wait

Blackadder has never reached his potential because most of his career has been in rehab. He is now 30 and unless he has been part of some stem cell experiment his injury situation will probably just get worse. He is an incredibly risky guy to take on tour or even rely on to do a job in the team because the chances of him getting a serious injury within a few weeks is 100%. I feel for him but he must have had 5 years in a row now where he has missed more rugby than he has played.

Finau yes, Jacobson no. Look at the amount of games Blackadder has played in Super Rugby in the last two years and compare it to Jacobson. 13 more matches played by the Chiefs captain. Just because Blackadder played a few good games in the finals doesn’t overtake him over Jacobson’s consistency.

Also Blackadder made the All Blacks after playing 5 games for the Crusaders in 2024. That was an extremely undeserved selection but not only that, he was starting at 6 where he put in below average performances in losses against Argentina and South Africa.

One of Razor’s many poor decisions.

You didnt think Jacobson was outstanding for the Chiefs week in week out?

Theres more than enough injury cover fire power…So it's up to Roberson and his crew to agree 100%+ who gets to front Borthwicks already named 23 man squad..

There are 12 players from last November in Englands team and 11 AB’s that played Scotland last weekend that will definitely be named..

If Robertson names Rieko that would make it a total of 12 players.. pending..

Borthwick named a squad of 23? Weird.

Tough year for Jacobson, no appearances for the All Blacks through injury.

Seems cursed like Blackadder

Jeez who does that leave for the xv team to play Uruguay? Especially in the locks and back row I saw TK played lock and made a good fist of it must be him and Hannah again with Boshier cover

Where is Naitoa Ah Kuoi?

Training cover is just that. They’re not part of the All Blacks squad, they're just there for the training sessions, then head back to rejoin the AB XV squad for their game in the weekend.

AJ Lam should have been involved in the ABs setup long ago - not necessarily a starter, but a strong squad member. He may not be as ‘exciting’ as some of these youngsters, but he’s an all-round, prototypical winger that appears built for the international game.

S
SB 32 days ago

Should’ve been in last year over David Havili. Not sure if he warranted selection after his NPC form this year.

B
BigMack 32 days ago

Agreed JR.

He covers 3 positions all equally well, others usually only cover 2.

I wouldn’t have him in place of QT and LF - happy for them to start together at 12 and 13 but AJ would be one heck of a bench player.

Also his D is underrated - very strong and holds up attackers.
