Scott Robertson analyses Ruben Love's 54-minute performance

Ruben Love of New Zealand scores his team’s second try whilst being is tackled by Blair Murray of Wales during the Quilter Nations Series 2025 match between Wales and New Zealand at the Principality Stadium on November 22, 2025 in Cardiff, Wales.

Hurricanes and All Blacks playmaker Ruben Love has been holding tackle bags on this end-of-year Northern Tour for the All Blacks, but when he got his opportunity, he largely took it with both hands.

Despite making a couple of errors in the second half before being substituted with what Robertson said was a slight ankle injury, Love’s performance with ball in hand was something to build on.

Love made his debut for the All Blacks last year against Japan, coming off the bench and scoring on the right wing.

With what looked like an ordinary carry during the first half, the 4-Test All Black managed to slide past a couple of Welsh defenders to score a fantastic try in the 29th minute.

Love has been talked about as a possible option for the All Blacks in the No.10 jersey, but his performance at fullback in Cardiff impressed head coach Scott Robertson.

“Yeah did his ankle there at the end but he had some great courageous moments, didn’t he? He backed himself and he trusts his instinct. He’s got good feet, his aerial game, like we’re really pleased for him,” Robertson told media in Cardiff.

“We’ll have a look at the tape again, but he’s good, he’s confident and we’re pleased for him to get on the stage again.”

Love impressed earlier this season against France in Hamilton, where he made his first start of the season after spending most of 2024 on the bench or in the reserves.

Former All Black and current Sky Sports commentator and analyst Jeff Wilson wasn’t sure about the substitution, especially with experienced winger Sevu Reece coming on in his place.

“I was a little bit disappointed for Ruben love to get substituted. I mean, I know the game was in the balance, so I think we’re leading by 10 at that point. You know, to get the experience you need to stay on the field,” Wilson said on the Sky Sport broadcast.

“We know what Sevu Reece can can do in the All Black jersey, I’m not sure we needed to see him again in the All Black jersey.”

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett, who has missed a couple of games during the 2025 International campaign with injury, explains that although they didn’t get what they wanted to from the end-of-year tour, it was pleasing to see his players stand up in Cardiff.

“Yeah, I think before we hopped on the plane, we had a clear vision to win a Grand Slam and last week and go and sort of build the rug out from underneath us and it probably took a few days for the boys to look look forward to tonight.

“I think the selections helped, bringing some fresh energy and guys having opportunities against a valiant Welsh side tonight, so it was pleasing to see guys step up and take that so and finish on a positive. So we’ll enjoy tonight and get around those guys who stood up.”

Razor being nice but the reality is Love has a lot to learn, still needs to prove he belongs at this level at super rugby finals footy and with another game or 2 against tier 3 nation.

Missing an up and under followed by a routine tackle in the same play to give inferior opposition a try is not a way to work your way in from the fringes of the ABs squad. At this point in time he is more likely to be dropped for Jacomb.

The problem is that Love proved his talent in a test against Wales. He won’t be seeing anymore game time in a hurry.

Well at least he played and after so much time on the sideline I think most would forgive the odd error and he did make a couple

The chargedown and the early kid timed jump

But he had some nice touches and a nice individual try

He needs time at 10 for the Canes that’s for sure

In the meantime McKenzie played pretty well actually

Passing was good mostly but he’s not to blame for the lateral backline play currently

But he was far better than Beauden

Terrible leadership from the staff, they need to get someone in to create a better culture.

the guy is a huge talent, ffs give him the 10 jersey for 5 tests in a row and he will show it. After waiting so long for a game you would expect he would make an error or two. I have lost all confidence in Razor I have tried to support him but he is a crap selector, he is just clueless on back play.

The issue is by all accounts Razor doesn’t coach too and that Hansen is doing most of it

Yikes

Amazing we have such poor coaches at this level!!

I dont believe he had an injury. He did not even know it was him coming off.

They didn’t mention that a Love clearance kick got charged down for what became a Welsh try. Showed promise, but also some questions about his decision making, I certainly wouldn’t put him in at 10 just yet.

Lack of game time! When did he last played? Razor at fault. Point!

He did mention he was good in the air, and it wasn’t the change down that led to the try, it was that he couldn’t gather the Welsh kick.

He also wasn’t going for touch, he aimed to touch and kicked it off the side of his foot for the opposite winger (who you can see take off just before).

Who cares? I’d rather we have someone in our backline who takes risks, than is risk-adverse like everyone else.
