The South African Rugby Union has issued a strong warning to players and agents over the promotion of unauthorised trial competitions operating outside the recognised global game.

SARU said any player registered with one of its entities who takes part in such trials will “face immediate expulsion” from all SARU leagues and competitions.

The union stressed its duty to protect the integrity of its competitions, player welfare and the stability of rugby domestically and internationally.

SARU urged stakeholders to respect established pathways and reaffirmed its commitment to talent development within World Rugby-sanctioned structures.

RugbyPass understands that the statement is primarily aimed at the emerging Mzanzi Rugby League. The MRL has promised full-time professional rugby, paying R15,000 to R30,000 monthly, with medical aid and athlete support for successful applicants.

Player trials are set to take place in June, with the inaugural season mooted for 2027.

The full statement reads: “The South African Rugby Union wishes to make clear its position regarding unauthorised trial competitions currently being promoted outside the structures of the global game.
Any player registered with a SARU entity who elects to participate in these trials will face immediate expulsion from all SARU leagues and competitions.

“SARU’s responsibility is to safeguard the integrity of its competitions, protect the welfare of players and uphold the values of the game. Participation in unsanctioned trials undermines these principles and threatens the stability of rugby both domestically and internationally.

“SARU calls on all players, agents and stakeholders to respect the established pathways of the sport. SARU remains committed to providing opportunities for growth and excellence within the structures recognised by World Rugby and its partner unions. Any deviation from these structures cannot be tolerated.

“The future of the game depends on unity, discipline and respect for the frameworks that protect it. SARU will act decisively to ensure these standards are upheld.”
