Nearly everyone is saying the same thing in wake of Eben Etzebeth red

Eben Etzebeth of South Africa, who was sent off for eye gauging on Alex Mann looks on after the Quilter Nations Series 2025 rugby international match between Wales and South Africa at Principality Stadium on November 29, 2025 in Cardiff, Wales. (Photo by David Rogers/Getty Images)

Twenty-four hours after South Africa’s demolition of Wales in Cardiff, Eben Etzebeth’s late red card for a thumb to the eye of Alex Mann has done the rarest thing imaginable in modern rugby: it has united fans of every stripe.

Even the Springboks’ most tribal supporters, usually prepared to die on any hill involving the green and gold, have accepted the obvious. The incident was ugly, avoidable and guaranteed to earn the veteran lock a lengthy suspension. Neutral fans, Welsh fans and – crucially – Bok fans are all singing from the same hymn sheet for once.

The replays spread across social media within minutes, and by Sunday morning the verdict across X was almost unanimously damning. Here’s how rugby reacted:

VIDEO

South African rugby writer Jared Wright didn’t mince his words: “Completely unnecessary. Brain-less from Eben Etzebeth. A long ban loading.”

Rugby commentator and Bok fan Rugby AP wrote: “Really, really irritated me that by Eben. Deliberate and thuggish act. He’s not actually that kind of player but that doesn’t matter now. Utterly unforgivable anyway and particularly for a player of his experience and stature… He better be apologising non-stop for next however long he’s banned for. And he can include a big ‘sorry’ to Plumtree as well who he has now royally screwed.”

BBC journalist John Beattie observed: “Not sure I agree with the world’s dirtiest players but this brings utter shame on the Springboks jersey. It’s cowardly and disgusting. It’s assault with possible life-changing consequences. It is not reasonable to accept this as a rugby risk.”

Nelson Dale of The Roar wrote: “Eben Etzebeth is one of the greats of the game, but he will be remembered for one moment: aged 34, in the 78th minute of the season’s final test, which the Boks were winning 73-0. I’ve been eye-gouged on a rugby field; it’s scary, unacceptable stuff. This deserves a hefty ban.”

Mick Collins wondered how such an act would look outside sport altogether: “Just wondering how long a sentence Etzebeth would get if he made a huge, concerted effort to gouge out Alex Mann’s left eye on the street, not the pitch. No idea why he shouldn’t be arrested for that.”

Popular rugby pundit Brendan Gallagher questioned why a senior Springbok was even involved in this end-of-year run-out to begin with: “Etzebeth has been a truly great player… but that was utter brainless from him. Why was he even playing in such a ridiculous extra fixture?”

Respected Irish rugby journalist Neil Treacy pointed out that Etzebeth has hardly led a blameless career in regards to the less savoury sides to the game. “Etzebeth has been king of the hands-near-the-eyes-but-just-missing-the-eyes for a long time. Play with fire etc.”

A small number of accounts, admittedly, have tried to mount a defence of sorts.

Screenshots of an earlier ruck appear to show Mann with his forearm near Etzebeth’s face, the implication being that the Sharks lock’s eye gouge was a retaliation.

However, there have also been posts implicating Etzebeth with having his hands in players’ faces in the past, and a screenshot of a Sharks versus Glasgow Warriors game is also doing the rounds.

While his disciplinary fate will be decided in the coming days, the court of public opinion has already delivered its verdict. And in a sport where every fanbase usually digs in behind its own, the shock isn’t that Etzebeth was sent off.

It’s that, for once, everyone seems to agree about what they saw.

A lot of contributors are pointing out to Welsh players eye gouging as this somehow absolves EE of blame. Both players should be banned if found guilty and for life

There is no way that a seasoned player like Etzebeth would jeopardize his career. There was clear provocation. Doesn’t excuse the incident but it does give it context. It's funny how safrican fans are turning on EE. If this had been against New Zealand,France or even England, he would be lauded for his prowess and strength and aggression. It would be Eben doing Eben things. The protector of the team. I’m not saying eye gouging is Ebens thing. I’m just saying we know he is passionate and expressive and has always been a don’t mess with me player. People in general are approaching this with emotion because it’s Wales and a young seemingly weaker player that's involved. Let the investigations run and the entire clip be reviewed including the events that led up to the incident. We know EE will face some sort of ban, and he will have to deal with what's happened. Let’s not make it worse south africans. We don’t trample over those of us that have fallen. Stalwarts who have given us so much in this game. This Wales game which should have never even taken place to begin with, has ended on a harsh note, especially for Wales who were completely out of thier depth.

What everyone keeps forgetting is this: if Eben Etzebeth actually wanted to gouge a guy’s eye, he wouldn’t do it blatantly in front of the ref, TMO, 20 cameras and 50,000 people in the 79th minute of a game that’s already 73–0. Use your heads. This is a bloke with 141 Tests, one tiny ban over a decade ago, and zero history of that kind of filth. Mann didn’t even grab his eye, didn’t flinch, didn’t need treatment. Looks far more like a messy face grab in a scrap, especially after the footage of Mann’s fingers in Eben’s eye right before it. Reckless? Sure. A deliberate eye-gouge? Come on

Open your other eye rj. Deserves everything he gets after that cowardly attack.

Can’t wait for the apology from the Welsh player who eye gouged Eben, hardly surprising no one on here is talking about it. This place just loves a good old fashioned Bok bashing.

Cricinfo used to have a comments section, it no longer does. How long till Rugbypass discontinues this one?

the problem is people aren’t here for the articles.

I would say 18 weeks taking into account his 120 tests with a very clean record.

What really gets up my nose around rugby, all teams, all level, all players is the fact that people are so quick to judge, be nasty and criticise before any event is properly investigated and fair punishment has been given. I was a player myself and I can say that most players get to that point sometimes, especially in a hard game when you loose it when you have been pushed to that point. It does not justify Eben's actions and it is fair to say “that was not a good move and at this level of his career he should’ve known better” but we were not in that position so dont get nasty. He played how many games? Yes he is fiesty and short tempered but never lost it like this there must’ve been a good reason for him to have lost it like this. He will get his punishment, and he will feel terrible about this so let’s not turn our backs on him and actually give him a bit of gratitude for his mistake. I am also very sure that he would be very apologetic to the Welsh player, his team mates and his country, no need to forbsuch arrogant reporting. There are better ways to word your disapproval. We also need to ask the welsh player what he did, and will he be man enough and sportsman enough to own up to his doing? Will he also get a fair pannishment for his side of unsportsman behaviour. We dont knowbyet but it seems like there was some gouging before on Eben but let’s see will be a fair and unbiased investigation. All the best to both players.

well, this was hardly a “hard game”, wasn’t it?

Nothing in that, play on. Man this sport has gone soft.

Dave Didley 13 days ago

No need for tackle bags or conditioning programmes. Any player that can’t survive a 5 second gouge is not test standard.

All politicians should care about their respective working classes.

Not just the African ones.

Check your privilege at the door?

In fairness, he is giving his opinion that African politicians should care about the African working class. I agree and I’m not telling Africans what to do either.

Chabale of France was banned for life from all Rugby clubs worldwide for hitting people as hard as he could in the balls. France even thought he could come on again but he was rightly booed off the pitch never to return.

The problem is that such a reputation goes before, and whoever does it is usually hidden from view. It changes the mood of the opposition sufficently to lose the game for Fear of severe eyes or balls injury.

It happened again only the previous week but the ref ignored it as a prank. Etzebeth has probably been making life easier for himself by looking for the soft part of the face with his finger, THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. CHEVALE OF FRANCE TURNED MANY GAMES BY DOING WHAT HE DID. ETZEBETH TOO. Great player eh?!

An eye for eye rings true. Footage clearly shows Manns baby finger gauging EE left eye. I’ve been eye gauged in a game and I grabbed the hand of the player, and when we stood up I knocked him out cold.

D
Dave Didley 13 days ago

Generally speaking, this is exactly why the game went professional.

Still, silly games equals silly prizes. I’m glad you got your rough justice.

That’s what I see in that video too.

EBEN should have pulled his fking eye out!!

Mann actually made contact on the ground with Ebens eyes first.

f
fl 13 days ago

So you think Etzebeth set out to gouge his eye as an act of pre-meditated retribution? If so, maybe 12 month or more ban is justified. Personally I don’t think the ban should be that long, because Mann didn’t make contact with Etzebeth’s eye.

J
Johan Langebaan 13 days ago

No problem with tbe EE red but fairness and consistency would surely require the Welsh player to be sanctioned too and proportionately so?

f
fl 13 days ago

why? The welsh player didn’t do anything wrong.

N
Nickers 13 days ago

100% intentional. 24 week ban.

M
Mark 13 days ago

Eye gouging is a particularly cowardly act, that can have permanent consequences on its victim.

Any ban must reflect the heinous nature of the offence.

There was/is clearly not a scintilla of mitigation regarding this incidence.
