He was always a strange pick for Eddie, was exactly the type of combative attitude that Eddie likes but was about 30KG lighter than his norm.

I still think we wasted Nathan Hughes - Eddie was insistent on this 130KG No 8 carrier, so he put on loads of weight for ENG and then didn’t fit the Pat Lam game plan at Bristol.

Ayerza was a great player for Leicester.

What ARG would give for two starting props like that at the moment and then I think they would be serious top level contenders. It’s the only area that keeps them out of the top 4 at the moment, the scrum isn’t quite there at present.

It was interesting to hear Borthers post match comments last week, he did say he wasn’t happy with how ENG dropped the attacking tempo towards the end of the game and then the following week we see Fin Smith on the bench.

It will be very interesting to see at what time he brings him on (I think around 55 mins) and how that “All Saints” midfield combo starts to attack in that final quarter.

He’s a top 7s player of course, you don’t achieve that being a poor tackle. There are just different dynamics in 15 aside and it was his rookie year. He’ll be a lot better in black next year.

Defence has been one of Carters strengths, he’s a great head on tackler and Tupaea being his Chiefs team mate knows that. Sorry but this is another one I think you are just coming from a flawed angle GS.

Not sure what you are trying to say with your first paragraph. Stock standard but well done, yes. The build up is very interesting, we have the scrum dominance situation, and the All Blacks marking up short on the blind, with Beauden doing a lot of talking and waving, but preferring to call their bluff and stay openside. He is too late coming across, plus England have great dominance at scrum time, and on their second shove disturb the AB scrum forcing Parker (blind) and Lakai (8), to tie themselves into it. Only Savea detaches correctly, but he is just a tad too far to help them cover the inside channels. This is what you can see Carter worrying about, he wants to mark and drift to the winger who is in the wide channels outside him, but there is not the cover coming across from the inside that there should be. So when yuo see him fake to make the tackle and start to shift to the wing, he realises crap, I actually have to make the tackle (mark the man). He obviously was not expecting Lawrence to not pass it to the open winger (as neither Roigard or Barrett were either it seemed), but he made the right choice, he just didn’t get himself set properly for a rather unusual situation.

Another ex-player weighs in on new Jacques Nienaber theory in Ireland

It did seem very strange to me that Farrell didn’t try to hire Felix Jones when he left England. Maybe he did and it just wasn’t publicised.

Given that Leinster is ultimately accountable to the IRFU, even if Ireland’s form is the fault of Nienaber, you’d have hoped that Farrell and/or his higher ups would have identified that danger and vetoed Nienaber’s appointment back in 2023, or insisted he hire assistants aligned with Farrell’s vision.

You have it upside down on both counts JW.

Look at this video and you will understand why. The whole idea is to isolate the top half of your body [passing laterally] from you bottom half [while running straight].

I’m with you, it feels like the bandwagon jumped on “poor irish performance” and I think we have under estimated quite how good that FRA performance was at IRE’s expense.

I doubt IRE are as bad as people are making out but they will need greater intensity in defence (better tackle completion), they will need to put more pressure on the breakdown and they will need to carry like they did in the 2nd half to create go forward ball.

12-year wait ended as major World Ranking change lands

The loss in 2023 was a devastating blow. If Ireland had even made a RWC final the bonus would have been astronomical. That was the opportunity. I am not a fan of the RWC I think it is a joke tournament not worthy of the $, hours, blood and sweat that nations put in preparing for it.

I haven’t claimed Leinster have gone backwards. That is YOUR strawman. Neither have the pundits. This isn’t about Leinster going backwards. It is about the chalk and cheese difference between Leinster and Ireland’s style nowadays. With so many Leinster players: having a different style hurts Ireland, having the same style helps them. This has been explained to you so many times that I assume you must understand but keep plowing on dishonestly to disguise that thin skin.

I think it is the subtle difference of 5|3 vs 6|2 G.

With 5|3 you typically had 3 props, a second row and a back row, with a scrum half, replacement 10 and either a game changing winger or centre that made impact.

Huw Jones responds to concerns surrounding Scotland camp

My issue with the Argentina match was that a 20 point win for Scotland in that match got them into the global top 6 and a better RWC draw.

They were 22 nil up, attacking at the Argentina line and Russell threw a wild pass, intercepted and try.

No. He has is back to the defence by the time it’s been released.

But you are right that a lot of AB problems derive from the passer turning to face the receiver before they ever deliver the ball.
