Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has made 13 changes to the starting side that defeated the All Blacks in Baltimore earlier this month, with Andre Esterhuizen set to captain the side for the first time against the Wallabies in Perth.

Erasmus has made mass changes to the side that secured a 3-1 series win in Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry, with Eben Etzebeth and Ethan Hooker retaining their spots in an otherwise new-look run-on side for the one-off Test.

Hooker has been retained on one wing, with Edwill van der Merwe and Aphelele Fassi rounding out the back three. Esterhuizen will become the 68th Springboks captain, linking up with backline utility Canan Moodie in the centres.

Herschel Jantjies has been selected at scrum-half, while Handre Pollard start at fly-half. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu will provide cover off the bench, with more than 330 Test caps between the replacements.

Jan-Hendrik Wessels will pack down up front alongside hooker Johan Grobbelaar and tighthead prop Zachary Porthean. 146-Test veteran ben Etzebeth will combine with Franco Mostert in an experienced second-row combination.

Paul de Villiers has earned a start at blindside flanker, with Elrigh Louw getting a run at openside flanker. Marco van Staden rounds out the backrow, while Jasper Wiese is in line for his 50th Test appearance from the bench.

“We’ve been working closely with our Head of Athletic Performance Andy Edwards on how best to manage the players to get the most out of them in this important encounter, so we had a few days off for the players’ bodies to recover from the last few Tests and also from the travel, so we had two days of training in Terrigal and resumed our usual Test week programme on Tuesday,” Erasmus said.

“This is going to be a big challenge against a team that has been playing good rugby, and who have won four of their last five matches, with their other result being a draw against the Pumas in Argentina.

“They also suffered a narrow defeat against Ireland in the Nations Championship and registered a comprehensive victory over Italy, and they will be playing in front of their home crowd, so we know a big game lies ahead.

“They are a proud nation and will certainly want to continue building momentum going into their next two clashes against the All Blacks and the second leg of the Nations Championship in November, so they are going to throw everything at us. Adding to that, they have physical forwards and a very exciting backline, so it will take another big performance from us to get the result.”

So much for Rassie saying he won’t under estimate Australia. Hope they get smashed.

Have you not seen the bench? Also, let’s not kid ourselves that these teams are not on the same level. Giving this starting team the trust to go out and get the win, shows maturity from the coach. And a year out from the World Cup, in my view is a smart view giving these guys a crack to build experience and exposure. Wallabies will be a difficult prospect next year and these guys will know what it feels like to play them.

if my data is correct Franco Mostert will be the 50th player to earn a Bok-cap this year (I am not considering the Barbarians game …)

Is Cameron Hanekom injured?

R

No, it’s rotation time again.

the starting 15 looks mostly solid, not world class though …. I have some question-marks at 8 (Hanekom would have been a way better choice in my humble view) and hope Moodie and Fassi will finally have a good day in a Boks jersey again for a change

Hearing what Rassie said, its possible the game ends with Jan-Hendrik Wessels at hooker and Moose at flank.

Wayneo help me out here. “Moose” = Marx?

Pace in the outside backs and a quality bench, but on the whole this lineup feels a little light and loose to me. The Aussies are a good team, I’m not sure we’re giving them the respect they deserve. They’ll feel they’re in with a chance. Rassie has named a good young front row but perhaps lacking in grunt, industrious halfbacks but a bit short on playmaking, pace on the outside but maybe not as solid as you’d like. And with all the changes they’re unlikely to be cohesive or structured. There are weaknesses there for a good opposition to exploit. Hopefully I’m wrong — or better yet, hopefully I’m right but it comes off for us anyway.

Good to see Hooker retained and Mostert back. After getting their tails up at the end of the RGR series I would have liked to see Hanekom and Arendse getting more of a run to build their confidence.

It’s a smart team sheet once again from Rassie. He has picked a starting lineup featuring a lot of players he wants to see more from as they're going to be part of that 4 deep he is preparing for next year.

And playing so many greats from the bench is genuine insurance against the possibility of a similar collapse to what happened last year. He doesn't want to lose to the Wallabies again, especially not when his team just won their biggest series in almost 30 years.

It's all well planned and this is why the Boks are the dominant force in world rugby. There are many other players he could've gone with but this is a strong lineup. Which is credit to the threat that the Wallabies still are even if they're not yet world champion material again.

While for the Boks maybe there aren't too many things to be learned from this fixture, unless they lose of course, the Wallabies stand to be the big winners even though it's only a singular test.

They'll know after this weekend exactly where they currently stand in the scheme of things, whether they're well worth their 7th ranking, whether they can better it in the foreseeable future or whether they have a vast chasm still to cross.

I’m not sure I agree with you TC, the starting 15 feels light on to me. Maybe not quite enough ballast there to anchor the newbies and secure the result?

But I enjoy your insights and analysis usually and if you’re confident with this team then that eases my spidey senses a bit. They are still tingling though.

Not the worst bench

possibility of Esterhuizen moving to flank and Pollard to inside centre with Sacha at 10 too. Horn can also come on as a 10 or 15 with Sacha at inside centre or 15. Options options options…..

Time for these players to play themselves into the RWC 27 Springbok squad. What an opportunity!

Wholesale changes were kinda expected. Only player I would’ve like to see in the 23 is Cam Hanekom.

Paul de Villiers has earned a start at blindside flanker, with Elrigh Louw getting a run at openside flanker.

Amateur writers. Get it right man, it is your job to report correctly. PDV is openside flank, and Louw blindside flank.

Wow, just wow. Rassie has literally surprised everyone. Disappointed not to see Cam Hanekom in at 8. Just 31 caps in the front 3 but to be fair they may just play 30mins and send on the big guns. Was expecting Thomas Du Toit and Boan venter to start. Marco van Staden at 8 is not unfamiliar but certainly surprising seeing as he is usually at 6. Elrigh Louw was obvious at 7 with PSDT going home as he is a lineout jumper. Herschel Jantjies as well is a shock with Grant Williams left out again. No surprises in the backs and glad to see Fassi Back. Horn off the bench as well is exciting and with plenty of firepower in reserve. If the starters do ok and the game is tight then the bench should have too much for the Wallabies in the second half

Fassi still has to convince me. Must be doing well in practice sessions as has not convinced in the games. Great to see Pollard back!

Wow! Look at the bench! It is the Nuke squad! 🔥Imagine you are a Wallaby rugby player at the 60th minute … all tired and then you notice Wilco Louw, Jasper Wiese and Malcolm Marx warming up on the sidelines waiting to come on! 🤣 But on a serious note … where is Faf de Klerk? Is Herschel Jantjies better than him? But who am I to question Dr. Rassie. In Rassie we trust! 😉

B
Barefoot 14 days ago

Jantjies I find a curious pick. Our top 3 #9s currently would have to be Krappies, Reinach and Williams, though Williams’ stocks have clearly dropped a bit since his uninspiring effort at Ellis Park. But still, Jantjies is probably 4th choice. In that case, instead of a steady but aging known quantity, for what benefit I’m not sure, wouldn’t it be better to select a young guy with long term potential, to give him some exposure and test him out? I’m thinking Haashim Pead …? What am I missing?

L
LouisJ 14 days ago

Faf will hopefully not play for the springboks again. He kicks too much ball away, and badly as well. His defence is solid but that is about all he adds to the party.

N
NoLongerARuck 14 days ago

Faf is good enough for URC or Currie cup but he is unfortunately behind the curve for the Boks
