Nadine Roos underlines need for Springbok success at Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens
Nadine Roos has not underplayed the need for success ahead of the Springbok Women’s Sevens’ Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Cup campaign getting underway.
The 29-year-old playmaker and captain of the team was SA Rugby’s Women’s Player of the Year as the side lost their place as a core HSBC SVNS team last season.
A win this weekend in Nairobi, Kenya, will automatically qualify the team with a place in the upcoming SVNS Division Three season.
“We all know what is at stake and every member of the squad is ready to go,” Roos said. “It will be important for us to focus on the here and the now on day one and get the momentum going, so we are not looking at the final result on Sunday, although that is crucial as well.
“Tomorrow will all be about the execution of the game plan and your role in the team. We have a strong team here, with experienced players, and I am confident that we will get the job done.”
The Springbok Women have been pooled with Zimbabwe and Mauritius and begin their campaign on Saturday.
Winning the title on Sunday will make the Roos and her teammates 10-time champions at the event. Over the years Roos has been instrumental in South Africa’s success at the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens.
A mainstay at the past four editions of the tournament. In 2024 she registered 85 points across six matches in Ghana.
Roos is now also a bona fide star of the 15-a-side game after she played her part in South Africa’s quarter-final finish at the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England.
“We need to play well as a team first, before any individual will stand out, so that will be my message to my teammates,” she said.
“We are under massive pressure, but we placed ourselves in this position and it is up to us to get out of that again. I am confident that we can.”
