'Mission accomplished' for Springboks at Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens
It was ‘mission accomplished’ for the Springbok Women’s Sevens as they dominated the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Cup in Kenya.
The side captained by Nadine Roos scored 214 points and did not concede a point during their time in Nairobi. To secure their 10th title at the competition and continue their continental dominance, the Springboks beat Kenya 22-0 in the final.
At the end of a weekend’s hard work the team’s coach, Cecil Afrika, was enthused with his players’ efforts.
“The players really deserve the credit, they did put in such hard work, and the results were a welcome reward for that,” Afrika said.
“We came here to defend our title, but also to qualify for the Challenger 3 tournament, something we managed to do. So, it is mission accomplished.
“There was a good bond in the squad and the players remained a tight knit group throughout the weekend. That helped in us executing what we wanted to.”
As a result of their victory South Africa have now qualified for HSBC SVNS 3, which will take place in January 2026.
Next up for the side is a trip to Dubai, where the Springbok Women’s Sevens squad will compete in the invitational tournament held in the desert.
It will be an opportunity for the side to continue sharpening their tools but to also maintain the form that saw them become champions of Africa again.
Over five games Nadine Roos scored 48 points and was named Player of the Final and Maria Tshiremba scored seven tries.
“We really came here with a strong mindset and purpose, and I think we showed what we are capable of,” Roos said.
“I think the way we defended, especially in the final against Kenya, proved how much we wanted to win as we kept them out, as we did with all our opponents during the weekend.”
