Magnus Bradbury set to share Edinburgh captaincy with Scotland team-mate

Edinburgh have reverted to a co-captaincy model for the upcoming 2026/27 season, with Magnus Bradbury retaining the role and Scotland centre Matt Currie joining him at the helm.

Head coach Sean Everitt moved away from shared leadership last season when he handed Bradbury the captaincy outright, but the capital club have now returned to an arrangement they used throughout the first four seasons of the United Rugby Championship.

Bradbury’s future beyond this campaign remains unclear after the No.8 signed only a one-year contract extension in May.

Currie, meanwhile, becomes the 86th captain in Edinburgh’s history and the first centre to share the role since Graham Shiel in 1999/2000. The 25-year-old endured a disrupted campaign last term, missing the opening three months with vertigo before injuries restricted him to eight appearances after his December return.

That followed two highly consistent seasons in which Currie made 22 appearances in 2023/24 and 24 the following year. Edinburgh begin their URC campaign against Ulster in Belfast on Friday night.

Bradbury said: “Leading this club last season is right up there with the proudest moments of my career, and I’m delighted to continue in the role alongside Matt.

“Matt is a great example of that. He’s grown into a real leader in this group, and the boys look up to him in the way he trains and the way he carries himself off the pitch. Between us, I think we can bring the best out of this squad.”

Currie added: “It’s a massive honour to be named co-captain of this club. When you look at the names who have led Edinburgh before, it’s not something I take lightly.

“I’ve always looked up to Magnus and learned a huge amount from him, particularly in terms of leadership.”

Everitt said: “Magnus and Matt complement each other really well, and we’re delighted to have them leading the team this season.

“Matt has the ability to be a Test starter for Scotland, and he’s been unlucky with injury at times. He’s one of the most consistent players in our squad.”
