“If coaches at the pinnacle of the game are remembered for their teaching of the fundamentals to elite players, it means there is something awry at the level(s) below” This! (with the (s) I added) says so much about the problems here and the lack of accountability at RA in resolving them. Like the Waratahs the Wallabies can replace whoever they want in the coaching box, but it will not result in changes to the fundamental flaws in the development of players, coaches and administrators in the game. As such while there might be a few bright moments now and then, it also won’t change the overall results.

Having players at Super and international level who can’t pass one way, throw the ball behind or above the receiver and so kill any momentum, lack the experience to read the game and so make decent decisions on where to be and know when to pass and when not to, can’t kick accurately and when they do kick don’t have anyone chasing to contest them is a disgrace and talks to the poor pathways, lack of long term planning and myopic decisions made by RA. No changes in coaching staff at the top levels is going to change any of this

Iron sharpens Iron. If you want to get better at scrummaging then scrum against the best over four tests. Work out what you are doing wrong, adjust and get back in the mixer again. Props dont get better playing about weaker scrums. The Boks got a few big shoves on the ABs last year. When those reels were broken down by a former AB prop I know, straight away he identified three technical adjustments that Williams and his flanker could have made pre engagement. Its about mastering the basics, timing, repetition and attitude.

As always selection will be a balance John. I had this discussion with Nick B that it is hard for the WBs to rotate players as every game is must win, they don’t have the luxury as a NZ or SA might. Its hard to rest players for Japan as Les is new and he will want to see players in his systems. Its also no given that the wallabies will win vs japan. But, if you don’t rest players vs japan, when do they? How do you blood some more centre depth for RWC or get a look at suaalii on the wing if not now? And if the WBs start losing to teams early in this next leg of games, the pressure will grow each week to get wins and so it gets harder and harder to pick anything but your best team.

You are right about that arg game, hunter was very good in that game given his limited opps under schmidt. He got rinsed for a couple of turnovers, but got no praise for 6 or so other key involvements, one i remember a 40m bust off a 5m scrum on WBs own line under immense pressure.

Im not saying youre wrong but there is no evidence of Lio-Willie having played for MABs on any online rugby sites, player profiles or any of the stats sites

I think it is wing and no where else, he can’t kick from I have been able to observe, and that is vital as we have seen with Tom Wrights 50/22s, they can reshape a game.

The best teams in the world, bar Ireland, have a massive tighthead lock. South Africa are just massive, full stop. Sometimes rugby is just that simple to an extent.

Paisami and Suaalii will likely be the first choice centres for Japan, so brace yourself for that, injuries permitting.

In regards to Kerevi, we will see, but I suspect that to still be a strong option. At 12.

Re centres, I would play Paisami and Suaalii yes, but you would have to have Henry in the mix somehow otherwise, we are not building depth but to the same extent, Ikitau could be back for Argentina, so gotta just play our best and most experienced team.

While I agree that there can be more to it and more techical aspects, the scrum still gets measured on Wins, Losses, and penalties/free kicks. he wasn’t winning that battle.
