Las Yaguaretés go back-to-back and USA claim gold in Montevideo

Four HSBC SVNS 2 teams have secured their place at the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series after podium finishes in Montevideo.

Argentina and South Africa’s women, along with Germany and the USA’s men have all locked up spots at World Championship events in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.

Las Yaguaretés doubled down on their tournament win in Nairobi last time out by finishing on the top of the podium again.

This time around it was not as straightforward for Nahuel Garcia’s team, who lost to Kenya on Day 1 and beat Spain with the clock in the red with a try from Player of the Tournament, Maria Brigido Chamorro.

The side concluded their time in Uruguay, Argentina faced-off with South Africa at Estadio Charrúa.

To beat the Springbok Women’s Sevens, María Paula, Talia Rodich, Candela Delgado and Marianela Escalente all dotted down to in the 22-10 win and wiped out scores from Lerato Makua and Maria Tshiremba.

Spain are also on the precipice of World Championship qualification with their second-place finish. With two more spots up for grabs, China are in pole position with Brazil and Kenya also in pursuit.

In the men’s competition Zack Test’s USA Men’s Eagles were flawless from start to finish in Montevideo to lock up their place at World Championship events and the opportunity to return to the HSBC SVNS Series.

To confirm their supremacy in South America, the USA beat Nairobi champions Germany 29-5 in their final game of the weekend. That performance included a brace for Player of the Tournament, Will Chevalier, as well as scores for Ben Broselle, Lucas Lacamp and Tucker Trickey.

That result against the Eagles was Germany’s sole loss of the weekend. Surprise winners last time out in Kenya, Pablo Feijoo’s team continued to impress with wins against Canada, Belgium, Germany and Kenya.

The Kenyans remain third in the overall standings with another podium finish. A strong tournament on home soil means the Teros are the team most-likely to secure the final World Championship spot next weekend in São Paulo.
