Injury-hit South Africa have been forced to make changes to their squad for the first HSBC SVNS World Championship event of the season in Hong Kong.

Cecil Afrika’s team are without team captain and reigning SA Rugby Women’s Player of the Year, Nadine Roos, who sustained a knee injury in the final HSBC SVNS 2 event in São Paulo and will miss the rest of the season.

Liske Lategan, Shannon-Lee Windvogel, Simamkele Namba and Patience Mokone will also miss the remainder of the season with injury.

It is expected that Leigh Fortuin and Kemisetso Baloyi will be available for World Championship events in Valladolid and Bordeaux.

To contend with these injuries, Afrika has called on Zintle Mpupha and Eloise Webb after the conclusion if the Pick n Pay Women’s Super League 1 season. Mpupha played for South Africa at HSBC SVNS 3 earlier this season while Webb has not played rugby sevens for South Africa since 2024.

Jané Mulder and Owami Mohuli are in line to earn their South Africa debuts at Kai Tak Sports Park next weekend.

Zintle Mpupha said: “We wanted to be in this position, to be where we can qualify as a core team again. It is a pity about the injuries as those players would all have loved to be part of the final phase, so we are also representing them next weekend.

“For me, having been in this situation a couple of times now, the message to the younger group would be to keep enjoying what we are doing, playing a sport we love and representing our country while doing so. Coach Cecil (Afrika) has a good plan for us and if we execute well, we will be able to surprise a few teams over there.”

South Africa have been named in Pool B with Australia, Canada and Great Britain.
