Impressive Blues rookie Torian Barnes inks new deal

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - FEBRUARY 14: Torian Barnes of the Blues is challenged by Samisoni Taukei’aho of the Chiefs during the round 1 Super Rugby match between the Blues and the Chiefs at Eden Park, on February 14, 2026, in Auckland, New Zealand. (Photo by Dave Rowland/Getty Images)

The Blues have secured impressive rookie Torian Barnes on a two-year deal, keeping the 22-year-old in Auckland through to the 2028 Super Rugby season.

The flanker made his Super Rugby debut in the first round of the 2026 season, starting on the blindside flank despite only owning a spot in the Blues’ wider training group.

The Canterbury product has come off the bench twice since then, and started in a win over his hometown team in round 4 before sitting out round 5.

With All Blacks Dalton Papali’i and Hoskins Sotutu in their final seasons with the Blues, Barnes’ signature secures what promises to be a significant piece of the Auckland club’s future.

The decision to extend was an easy one, according to Barnes.

“It’s been a great experience coming into this environment and learning from the players and coaches here. The Blues have backed me from the wider training group and given me the chance to prove myself,” he said.

“Pulling on the Blues jersey and running out has been something really special, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep building my game here. I’m looking forward to continuing to contribute to the team over the next few seasons.”

At 195 cm tall, the athletic back-rower has drawn initial comparisons to Blues great Jerome Kaino. He’s played 15 games for Canterbury, including the final in last year’s title-winning run.

Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said the club were excited to have Barnes locked in.

“Torian is exactly the type of young player we want to invest in. He came into our wider training group with a strong work ethic and has taken every opportunity that has come his way this season,” Williams said.

“What has impressed us most is his hunger to improve and the physical edge he brings to the contest. He’s a player with enormous potential, and we’re excited to see how he continues to grow in a Blues jersey over the next few years.”
