Exeter boss Rob Baxter has welcomed the idea of Welsh teams being included in an expanded Gallagher PREM, and his view is supported by other directors of rugby.

Ever since Cardiff and Swansea played rebel friendly fixtures against English sides in front of decent crowds in the late 90s, the idea of an Anglo-Welsh League has had plenty of support.

And Baxter sees the mutual benefits of a cross-border competition, believing that it ‘ticks a lot of boxes’.

“I think an Anglo-Welsh league would be brilliant, I’ve been a big advocate of it for years,” Baxter said at the launch of the new Gallagher PREM season at Alianz Stadium.

“I think we all know clubs are struggling with the amount of games. Welsh clubs seem to be talking about not really wanting to be in the URC, because it’s a financial burden.

“It ticks a lot of boxes. PREM clubs want more games. I don’t want to talk for Welsh clubs, but they don’t seem to really want the travel and disruption that the URC can cause.

“So there’s a bit of an ideal nature to it all.”

Gloucester have frequently tapped into the Welsh talent pool, with national team captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake the latest big names to head over the Severn Bridge.

Their head coach, George Skivington, is another who wouldn’t object to the regions and PREM teams being wedded to each other in a league system.

“I’m not against it,” he told WalesOnline.

“I wouldn’t have given two minutes to the logistics of it. But we’re all the same island.

“It’s very easy from Gloucester in terms of travel. I’ve always enjoyed playing against the Welsh teams. So from my point of view, I wouldn’t be against it at all.”

West Country clubs have a proud history of playing Welsh sides in the amatuer era, and the Anglo-Welsh Cup continued the tradition until being shelved.

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam is another who’d be up for seeing that rivalry renewed.

“We all know the competition needs to go from 10 to 12 teams,” he said.

“If that’s the Welsh teams, that’s great. If it’s someone coming up from the Championship, that’s great.

“Certainly, it’s the natural fit if it’s the Welsh teams because we’re all on the same island. There’s a lot of history between these sides.

“But hey, that’s out of my control. We just control what we can. At the moment, they’re not in but if they were, we’d welcome it.”

It's a good idea. It'll save Welsh rugby for a start, but our second tier will have something to say about it.

Glad to see this from three DoRs. The Prem needs to go to 14 teams in reality to match the Top 14 in France. The RFU, WRU and the sponsors seriously need to get their heads out of the sand and get this geared up for September 2028.

Agreed! Perhaps this could help solve Welsh rugby's cash problems.

Wallabies player ratings vs New Zealand | Bledisloe Cup II 2026

There is not much truth to your post Olly. Fraser McReight is still one of best 7’s in the world. The All blacks did very well to keep him out of the game and the referee denied him a few that he really should have given. He made a massive number of tackles and was very involved in attack. Carlo is also a very good player but there are other ways of getting him into the game, not smash McReight. Jorgensen has been the most valuable player in the Wallabies squad for a while now, he has made many try saving tackles and his general defense is very good. He possibly had his worst game of the season in defence and he made a few mistakes on attack but he was electric in attack at the same time. If you think Jorgo is the worst defender in the country, you need to re-watch the last 15 test matches to refresh your memory because you are incorrect. Dropping him would be ridiculous. He is also only a youngster who is developing and is already one of the best in the world, so I don’t agree with what you are saying of Jorgo. Potter didn’t have a good game either, but he has performed for the wallabies before. I was also surprised that Pietsch wasn’t selected but that is how it goes, potentially they were trying to keep playing the guys in the squad instead of bringing guys in that haven’t been training with the team. I would also work on young props instead of Aiden Ross, but he had his best test matches for the Wallabies yet and he actually showed, in my opinion, for the fist time this year that there is a reason for having him in the squad. I do not disagree with what you are saying about Daugunu, I would have shifted Suaalii to the wing and played Daugunu in the midfield with Henry. Meredith however really stepped up and looks like he is going to be a good option for the future. HMP also looked dangerous in the few minutes he had on the field but didn’t play long enough to really be judged.
