Zebre Parma have confirmed the signing of Italy U20 captain David Odiase ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. The back rower, who was born in Crema in 2003, will return to Italy from Top 14 side Oyonnax.

Odiase previously came through the ranks at Rugby Colorno and will reunite in Parma with Massimo Brunello, the coach he worked under during two Six Nations U20 campaigns and at the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship.

He captained Italy at that tournament, leading the side to a historic win over South Africa as well as a victory over Japan.

The move marks a return to Italian rugby for one of the country’s most highly rated young forwards. Principally an openside, the 6’3, 112kg forward became a viral sensation when giving a rousing speech prior to Italy’s opening game at the 2023 World Rugby U20s tournament.

Already involved with Gonzalo Quesada’s senior national squad for the upcoming 2025 summer tour, Odiase is considered a long-term prospect for the Azzurri.

Zebre CEO Fabrizio Gaetanello welcomed the signing, saying: “The return to Italy of David, one of the most promising talents in our country, is good news for the whole movement. I am sure that with the Zebre shirt he will assert himself and that his talent and professionalism will be important in the team’s economy.”

Odiase said the decision to join Zebre was made “with conviction,” citing the presence of Brunello and the club’s sense of unity as key reasons for his return.

“At Zebre I find a family environment, with a strong sense of brotherhood that allows me to integrate and perform at my best. I have already met some classmates during a summer internship, and finding them, together with new faces, makes this experience even more special.

“I believe that a united group can achieve great results, and Zebre’s recent progress gives me hope for next season. I can’t wait to start this adventure”.

Eben Etzebeth staring at huge ban after another red card

Well… I'd say the modern Boks are not a particularly violent team but it's impossible to getaway with much violence on an international rugby field now. The Boks of yesteryear were at times brutal. Whether or not the reputation is justified, they do have that reputation amongst a lot of rugby fans.

As for point 2.. it's a tricky one, I don't want to slander a nation here. I'm no “Bok hater”, but I've gotta say some Bok fans are the most obnoxious fans I've personally encountered. Notably this didn't seem to be a problem until the Boks became the best in the world. I agree that fans from other nations can be awful too, every nation has it's fair share of d-heads but going on any rugby forum or YouTube comments is quite tedious these days owing to the legions of partisan Bok fans who jump onto every thread regardless of if it's about the Boks to tell everyone how much better the Boks are than everyone else. A Saffa once told me that SA is a troubled country and because of that the Boks are a symbol of SA victory against all odds so that's why the fans are so passionate. At least you recognise that there is an issue with some Bok fans, that's more than many are willing to concede. Whatever the reason, it's just boring is all I can tell you and I can say coming from a place of absolute honesty I encounter far, far more arrogance and obnoxious behaviour from Bok fans than any other fanbase - the kiwis were nothing like this when they were on top. So look much love to SA, I bear no hatred of ill will, I just want to have conversations about rugby without being told constantly that the Boks are the best team in the world and all coaches except Rassie are useless etc
