Difficult times for backrow players in Oz at the moment. Plenty of options and good players won’t make it. Fraser, Bobby and Cale is an interesting option. Lots of athletisim but is it physical enough for what Test Rugby is at the moment? Not sure if it is, as we have seen players like Harry Wilson exposed in this area, resulting in a momentum-killing issue for the Wallabies’ attack.

This mobile lock playing a 6 seems to work in the tight games where you just have to win the contact zones, scrums and lineout.

There’s a ton of talent in the back row - Brial might struggle to get in there for a Wb’s spot, given Wilson, Bobby V, CDC, Samu, and Cale are all in the mix. Williams is also playing 6 at the mo. Our cup runneth over.

If I was betting on Wallabies breakouts for next season’s RWC I think Amatosero will be that guy. With Swain leaving (he was treated badly on last season tour), there’s a locking spot in the squad, and I hope Amatosero gets it this year and gets a chance to play test level footy. Maybe in the wider squad for July with a bench spot for a couple of the August games. With Skelton likely to play only in a few of the July tests, Amatosero could be the big body lock that we need. Agree that LSL is a good player, but for some reason Joe doesn’t use him enough. Maybe under Kiss, especially given the QLD connection, he’ll get more chances.

It always cracks me up when the losing team has the best statistics from a match. The obvious point is that whoever is collecting the statistics is not collecting the correct ones. Rugby is a hugely dynamic game and those statistics that are mentioned are such a small part of what is a dynamic process means they are pretty much useless. I guess that’s why the losing team did so well; they played for statistics that don’t mean anything.

England, Scotland, Wales aren’t treated as isolated Tests; they’re filters. Who survives fatigue? Who adapts tactically? Who grows under pressure? Only then do you earn the right to face New Zealand. That’s ruthless clarity and it’s why the Boks rarely look shocked by step-ups in intensity.

Erasmus is openly comfortable not knowing yet. Squad sizes, rotation, combinations all flexible. Compare that to coaches who cling to a “plan” even after it’s been dismantled in public. The Springboks are planning for chaos.

Another way of reading this is to say that Scotland are very well coached. They haven’t had the players in the forward pack to consistently beat the best, and yet in the era of rush defence and percentage play box kicking they have mapped out a unique strategy based on their strengths (mainly backline magic) to win a decent amount of games.

You can’t bully your way to an 80% winning record like this, but with the players they have, they seem to have performed far above their station for the last few years now. And perhaps just as importantly for international rugby, they’ve shown that there’s still more than one way to win a game of rugby. This is a rare and beaufiful thing for us non-scottish rugby viewers to admire from afar.

'Is this my fault?' - How Borthwick's shepherd's crook might affect vanquished England stars

I am actually a believer in making those sorts of calls if a player is obviously not playing well, is being targeted and getting rattled etc. The Rassie call with Libbok was a masterstroke in my view. Libbok was not coping well, it was probably a bad call to start him in any case. Pollard was the man for that game against that team on that day.

I’m not so sure on Borthwick’s calls on Sat. past. Sometimes it is not the throw that is bad, it is the lifting….hard to judge on one viewing only. But yes, the England lineout was not working well. But that was maybe in part due to Irish nous in competing. Another factor was that the referee was very pedantic in some of the not straight calls.

Agree with this post. The hero to zero, zero to hero stuff hapenning in the 6N shows just how big the NZRU overreaction was. Perhaps Kirk was supping too much at the English / social media Kool Aid while he over there. Perhaps some of the players were too. The reality is a team can be magic one minute and crap the next and the other way round - as the English, Scottish and Irish performances have showed. Decisions should be made on hard facts not emotive reaction or subjective feelings about what the team looks like - and certainly not based solely on what players think about their coach one or two weeks after a loss in which they were a key part.
