Glasgow Warriors player ratings: Glasgow Warriors’ longstanding unbeaten record at Scotstoun came to an end against Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, losing 22-19.

The Warriors were firm favourites in this fixture, but Toulon turned up with the bit between their teeth. Here’s how the players rated:

15 Josh McKay – 5
Carried 11 times and beat four defenders, showing his usual attacking threat, but the big moments went against him. Beaten too easily by Juan Ignacio Brex for Toulon’s crucial try, and then had the ball stripped in the dying seconds with Glasgow chasing the win. Those moments overshadowed the positives.

14 Kyle Steyn – 5
Six carries and 11 tackles underline his work rate, but he’ll be disappointed defensively. Beaten by Gael Dréan for the opening try and missed two tackles overall. Did produce a line break and looked threatening at times, but not clinical enough.

13 Stafford McDowall – 8
One of Glasgow’s standout performers. Set the platform for their opening try and assisted the second with a beautifully timed pass. His 14 carries and 12 tackles highlight his influence on both sides of the ball, while his kicking game helped pin Toulon back early.

12 Sione Tuipulotu – 6
Heavily involved with 15 carries, the joint second most in the match, and beat three defenders, but lacked polish at key moments. Turned the ball over twice and had it ripped in contact. Also denied what he thought was a try.

11 Ollie Smith – 7
Took his try well and was a genuine threat, with nine carries and three defenders beaten. Also made a line break. However, three missed tackles and a turnover conceded show there were defensive and handling blemishes in an otherwise lively performance.

10 Dan Lancaster – 6
A slightly chaotic display. Five defenders beaten and a line break show his attacking spark, and his late break nearly set up a dramatic finish. But he was stepped too easily by Dréan.

9 Ben Afshar – 6
Linked nicely for the opening try and kept things ticking, finishing with four carries and nine tackles. However, maybe didn’t provide the threat George Horne brings.

1 Patrick Schickerling – 6
Put in a serious shift defensively with 16 tackles, one of the highest among forwards, and added eight carries. A workmanlike performance in a tight battle up front.

2 Gregor Hiddleston – 7
Seven carries and a crucial try early in the second half gave Glasgow real hope. Also made seven tackles, though two turnovers conceded slightly dent his impact. Still, a key contributor, and the lineout worked well in tricky conditions.

3 Zander Fagerson – 6
Eleven carries and 11 tackles reflect a solid all-round effort, but he wasn’t able to dominate proceedings. A steady, if unspectacular, showing.

4 Olujare Oguntibeju – 5
Six carries and 11 tackles show involvement, but a penalty conceded for offside before his substitution summed up a slightly untidy display.

5 Alex Samuel – 6
Outstanding defensive output with 20 tackles, second most in the match, and 10 carries. A real engine room performance, though two turnovers conceded take the edge off slightly.

6 Matt Fagerson – 6
Matched Tuipulotu with 15 carries and added 17 tackles, showing huge work rate. Also won a turnover, but missed two tackles and could have done more to stop Toulon’s second try.

7 Rory Darge – 8
Immense in defeat. 21 tackles (joint most in the match), 11 carries, three defenders beaten and two turnovers won. His breakdown work, particularly that penalty on his own line, was colossal.

8 Jack Dempsey – 6
Fourteen carries and 12 tackles show solid involvement, and he added a turnover won. But lacked the punch to truly dominate Toulon’s pack in key moments.

Replacements
16 Seb Stephen – 6
17 Jamie Bhatti – 6
18 Sam Talakai – 6
19 Macenzzie Duncan – N/A
20 Euan Ferrie – 6
21 Angus Fraser – 5
22 Jack Oliver – N/A
23 Adam Hastings – 5
