Finn Russell on his future: I won't make the same mistakes as the past

Scotland and Lions star Finn Russell doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past and set parameters around the length of his Test career.

The mercurial fly-half has a couple of seasons left on his £1 million-year contract at Bath and will be 35 by the time the 2027 World Cup in Australia is over.

By then, Russell will have certainly become a caps centurion for Scotland – he is five short of the milestone at present – and could have even overtaken Ross Ford (110 caps) as his country’s record holder for most Test appearances.

“I’ve got this year and next year at Bath,” he told Somerset Live. “So it takes me up to summer 2028 I think.

“It’s a funny one, it’s something that people ask you, you know, what do you think after the next World Cup and Test commitments in 2028 and where you’re going to be playing or what you’re going to be doing.

“I don’t want to put a number on it, I don’t want to be like, ‘oh I’m going to finish up after the World Cup or after that season I’m going to finish up’.

“I’ve maybe said that a few times and within like a few days I’m just like, nah, I don’t know.

“It’s hard to tell you, it could be in a year’s time, a year and a half’s time, it could be in four years’ time that I’m just like, I’ve maybe had enough of this now and I want something different or I want more time off to spend with the family pretty much, I’m not sure yet.

“I’m just going to play as long as I’m enjoying it, I’m just going to keep going as long as I can. I’ve got nothing to kind of stop anytime soon. Hopefully that’s a good thing, but we’ll see.”
