Pressure mounting on Boks to 'blow this All Black team off the park'

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - SEPTEMBER 06: Ardie Savea of New Zealand talks with Siya Kolisi of South Africa following The Rugby Championship match between the New Zealand All Blacks and South Africa Springboks at Eden Park on September 06, 2025 in Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand radio & media pundit Mark Watson believes that all the pressure is on the Springboks as expectations of a 4-0 series victory over the All Blacks mount in South Africa.

The world number one ranked Springboks side has won 26 of their last 30 Test matches heading into this series, including three of the last four over the All Blacks in that timespan.

Watson believes that the current run of success has built an expectation among their fans to wipe the floor with the All Blacks 4-0 across the Greatest Rivalry Tour, which he sees day-to-day all over social media.

“The pressure is on South Africa, because you’ve only got to hear all the stuff coming out and reading the comments and listening to their fans,” Watson told Martin Devlin on the DSPN network.

“They think they’re going to win this 4-0. They honestly believe this is the greatest South African team of all-time.

“Last year they probably had the greatest ever performance against us when they absolutely tanked us in Wellington.

“But we did beat them at Eden Park. Australia did beat them. World Cup final was only sort of a marginal point or so.

“I don’t think we’ve been well coached in the past, I think we play a different style of rugby to them. As I said, it’ll be interesting to see what they do to try and slow things down. But the pressure is on them.

“You know there is an expectation in South Africa for them to blow this All Black team off the park, and I think that in a funny kind of way just allows us to just walk quietly and carry on.”

However, should South African predictions of a 4-0 series whitewash come true, it would be the ‘worst case scenario’ for New Zealand Rugby as a whole that would bring wider implications.

Watson said that the entire system would need to be looked at and “rugby as a whole” in New Zealand would need to be changed, well beyond the All Black level.

“I don’t see this as a four test series,” Watson continued.

“I just see this as three Tests in South Africa. I’m not interested in the Baltimore Test.

“I mean, I want to win that, but I just want to win the series in South Africa, not the fourth one in Baltimore, which to me is an exhibition game.

“They’re the important parts, but yeah, the fallout would be just unbelievable [of losing 4-0].

“And this is when you would have to probably start putting some [responsibility] back on the players, the Players Association. I think we’d have to take a serious look at Super Rugby coaching pathways, the whole lot.”

What G no English or French fans ? How rude of you to not include them haha and only 1 Aussie well that’s just not right …if it was a cricket forum there would probably be 15 or so at least!! I’m trying to get him go protest the tour outside Ellis Park he thinks a tour by Ireland Wales Scotland or Italy would be much more appropriate ..well that’s the troll attempt anyhow ..but will block you are right

B
Bazzallina 42 days ago

This shows how stupid you are talking about results 7 years ago and 3 years ago they mean absolutely nothing to opposition coaches and analysts …

Think maybe you should go protest the tour outside Ellis park with a big go home All blacks and arrogant New Zealanders sign!! Would that make you feel better grumpy boy?

ww 42 days ago

New Zealand uses people, they dumbed us we went north and it has been the best decision ever. Bokke is the best bc of aligning to north. Most recently they dumbed Australia by choosing tour to SA bc they think and believe they will learn and be competitive by playing against the best team in the world, bc France always bring third stream team and if Rassie is clever he should do the same by fielding our 2nd stream team like France. By compromise win to gain more with fresh young players, just when all black thought they will gain, let it be Bokke gain more but we trust Rassie he will do that and compromise winning , we don’t care about ranking but world cups.

w
ww 42 days ago

Same goes to you. It has been now more than 8yrs Bokke ruling the world rugby. Another fact thing is, the world hate Rassie bc he is the best coach in the world currently and he has been like that for the past 8yrs. Eddie have explain in details why he respect and value Rassie but for sure New Zealanders wouldn’t accept the only way Jeff accept is World Cup final 2023 he was brought to submission. Even this tour to SA rugby SA made a mistake , we should have allowed any of URC nations to tour SA. New Zealander arrogance have destroyed their confident hence England humble them together with France.

Someone needs a cuddle I think ..so much hate anger frustration ..you need to learn to channel it better in more positive ways ..not to be rude but are you able to learn ?

New Zealand blah blah minor insects singing and bully rugby fans who enjoy sports. Yoh can try to make some sense with your limited knowledge, rugby isn’t played in New Zealand only. France and England and Australia , I wonder if you know that, anyway Eddie is from Australia but I praise him bc credit goes where is due. You New Zealander are so arrogant and bias think every good thing has to comes from New Zealand , is great that all black is viewed as nothing today in world rugby. Any team in the world beats all black, France and England have punished all black painfullly, 2019 World Cup, 2023 opener yet their fans think they can bully people global about all black shame!

Meh you just ranting verbal garbage attempting to slag off anything to do with ABs for what reasons one can only guess but that’s all you do is attempt because you are so far off target that none of what you say hits home in a word ..ignorant

If you read between the lines and listened to that Mark guy you can see that they are nervous 🤣

G
GrahamVF 42 days ago

Pleased to say it’s the same guys in SA who were saying a few years ago that Kolisi was only selected as a quota player. There are idiots everywhere - wherever Unknown Land is too. Anyone who has any history of watching AB Springbok games is nervous no matter what side you support. Every coach is nervous every player is nervous and every fan who knows the difference between off form and off sides is nervous, so your comment is faintly ridiculous.

If anything, we should all be paying closer attention to the image used for this article.

If Siya and Ardie can be so tender with each other, why can’t we all just get along?

Pundits are like pilot fish, feeding off the chum around the big fish. Or like crayfish from the south coast, kept in long drops.

The usual reverse psychology from BS to take the pressure off his countrymen & pile it on the Boks. His been at it for years now….same MO🥱

Kiwi pundits are adding the pressure on themselves, 90% of articles out at the moment are from some hack that played 20 years ago- Hanson has about 30 articles from 1 podcast. Bla bla bla thinking they know how we are going to play. Not even is Saffas know what team will be fielded and what style they will play, we just know we are strong and that scares the daylights out of NZ.

Everyone will only know how good the other team is after the final whistle.

The hype is good, kiwis are under pressure if they lose after all this it will be worse than losing to us, the French, us again and the poms several times. Just shhhh and enjoy the rugby.

B
Boddasaffa 35 days ago

Ha ha boys take it easy, we are all going to watch the same game and hope our teams win. Every one thinks their team is better and we will find out on the day, and after the series we will know for sure.

Good luck and there really is nothing to be afraid of, if you support the BOKKE!!!!

Bollocks you don't scare us mate…

J
Jen 42 days ago

Bruh, there’s just as much commentary from SA pundits writing the ABs off entirely. It’s going both ways.

B
Bazzallina 44 days ago

Nah..there will be pressure and expectation on them to win 3-1 especially home advantage and a draw will as bad as the result above will be to us.

But ultimately even tho we saw some panic at the disco amongst Bok fans and punters after 2 Oz games and Eden park loss Rassie&co have to much cash in the bank as do most of the players and straight up just don’t think that’s the environment they operate in atm

G
GrahamVF 42 days ago

Don’t agree with you Baz. No one that I know who knows anything about the game expects anything other than a very tight, hard fought series which could and probably will be decided by one or two moments of brilliance one or two dreadful mistakes and one or two refereeing decisions. That’s test rugby.

3-1 ABs

No side at this level blows another side off the park. Stupid inflamatory remark. Four consecutive test matches will test the depth and resolve of both squads, and the make up of Rennie squad is good. Tall timber at lock, strong spine of hooker through locks and 8 th man, scrummie, flyhalf, inside center to MacKenzie. Just hope the refs aren’t the main talking point after each game- from both sides. Going to be epic, and the best part of this series is it does not involve a N Hemisphere side.

H
Hammer Head 44 days ago

The boks blew the ABs off the park the last time they met?

w
ww 45 days ago

You could do better analysis without insulting mate. Yoh don’t have to be such rude to raise your strong view.

W
Wayneo 45 days ago

I was laughing at Mark Watson losing his ….. on DSPN freaking out over how bad it would be if the ABs lost this series. Him saying all the pressure was on the Boks was just his way of coping. The guy needs to chill out, its just a game.

J
Jen 42 days ago

That’s a pretty standard state for him on that podcast TBH 😆

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

A new Zelaand Radio pundit knows what’s happening in South Africa? Laughable.

w
ww 45 days ago

It’s funny. Every New Zealanders if yoh listen they are way ahead of themselves and bias. Steve, Jeff, and many more especially in pundits and they have been like this every time Bokke vs all black including wellington hammering most high score defeat in their history in their own backyard we are used to their too much talk. Listening to SA pundits how humble and reserved they are shows how SA is made of in terms of personality. New Zealand haven’t learn lesson that they aren’t anymore bench setter in world rugby and that hurts them deeply.

W
Wit Kant 45 days ago

Ben Smith writing about Mark Watson. Match made in heaven, sure they could blow one another off the park.

P

Mark Watson the new Ben Smith. He also believes the Boks slow the game down. So yeah, I wouldn't take anything he says too seriously.

O
Over the sideline 44 days ago

Maybe…, he believes the stats that prove it.

B
Bazzallina 44 days ago

I’m sorry PB but they do have a history of it but ultimately everyone does it when it suits them ABs have done plenty of it to ( really they are all doing it to recieve comms) …watch out for ABs tapping if players are down behind and not going to sideline ad that gives players ops to get “treated” before a setpiece ..Watson is a Moron most kiwis dislike him and the ones who agree with his views on heaps of stuff in rugby just fans who love a whinge

J
J T 45 days ago

Yeah, I think the South African bubble is ripe to be burst and the All Blacks are in a good position to do so. I can see Sascha trying to do a little too much and getting his team in trouble with some costly errors…

J
Jacque 44 days ago

Clearly no nothing about the SPRINGBOK culture 🤣

P
PB 45 days ago

To be fair, I see as many comments from Kiwi fans on some of their sites that they will beat the Boks, because they play so much faster etc. Bryn Hall, again they will run us off our feet.

So go ahead and burst the bubble! 🫧

It could very well happen that the Kiwi bubble 🫧 of this new era could just as brutally be popped.

As for Sacha, he is a X- factor player and he has licence to try too much. That is why Reinach is partnered with him, also why Pollard is on the bench.

As for errors, well Italy forced the AB’s into plenty of those initially. Expect greater defensive pressure and bigger hits against the Boks.
