Having previously been head coach of South African side Griquas in Currie Cup, the former Junior Springbok joined Edinburgh Rugby in August 2024 from Major League Rugby (MLR) side New England Free Jacks, where he led the team to back-to-back MLR titles in 2023 and 2024.

Before taking up coaching, Mathie played Super Rugby for the Bulls, as an understudy to Fourie du Preez, and the Sharks.

Mathie then went overseas and played in the English Premiership with Leeds and Sale before returning home to South Africa, to become Director of Rugby at Durban High School.

He joins fellow assistant coaches Rob Chrystie and Michael Todd in leaving Edinburgh at the end of the season, with head coach Sean Everitt looking to freshen things up in a bid to turn the club’s fortunes around.,

Edinburgh are 13th in the URC table, having won just three of their 10 games to date.

“I’d like to thank Scott for all his contributions over the past two seasons,” said Everitt.

“He is a talented coach who has brought a great deal of energy and insight to our attacking play since arriving in Edinburgh.

“Scott still has plenty to contribute over the remainder of the current campaign, and we wish him the very best in his next challenge.”
