Eddie Jones in 'discussions' with Racing 92 - reports
The French media are reporting that England head coach Eddie Jones has had ‘discussions; with French giants Racing 92.
Racing 92 are currently looking for a new head coach to replace the outgoing Laurent Travers. Travers is set to take over the role of club presidency from owner Jacky Lorenzetti.
The Ile-de-France club have already announced the arrival this summer of Rory Teague, who will replace attack coach Mike Prendergast who is retiring to Munster after a decade in French rugby. Forward coach Dimitri Szarzewski has also had his contract extended to 2025.
Now Midi Olypmpique report that Jones is indeed interested in the role and has had discussions with Racing 92 over taking over the reins at the Parisian side. The paper however reports that the discussions did not conclude in an agreement of any kind and that ‘nothing is less certain’ with regards to who will take over.
Jones is set to leave his role as England head coach after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, so he wouldn’t be available for next season.
When does leave, he won’t lack for suiters.
Racing might have to fight off Rugby Australia for Jones’ signature. Double World Cup winner Phil Kearns is on record saying he believes that Jones would be the perfect fit to nourish the next wave of future Wallabies in Australia.
The former hooker reckons Jones will see his current RFU deal through to its World Cup 2023 expiry – but he then wants Rugby Australia to consider recruiting Jones for a role back home.
“They [the RFU] are not going to get rid of him before the 2023 World Cup. He won’t be panicking about his position,” said Kearns. “Eddie is a really good bloke and an amazing coach. Eddie would be fabulous in dealing with the rugby youth of our nation, the up-and-coming players.
