Discarded Chiefs player secures move to Japan's Rugby League One

Former Exeter Chiefs inside centre Tamati Tua has secured a move to Japan Rugby League One Division One outfit Ricoh Black Rams Tokyo for next season after being released by Rob Baxter when his contract ran out at the end of June.

Tua, 28, who can also play outside centre and left wing, was a target for Toulon and Perpignan before missing the whole of last season after an operation on an Achilles tendon he ruptured in training in August.

He made 19 appearances in his first season at Sandy Park, scoring two tries after moving from Super Rugby Pacific, where he had played for the Blues and then the Brumbies. He also played for Northland in New Zealand’s NPC.

Tua was one of 10 senior players allowed to leave the Prem/Prem Cup finalists, and is the latest to find a club, with only props Khwezi Mona and Kwenzo Blose and back row Martin Moloney yet to announce their retirements or new clubs.

The Black Rams, who finished fifth last season, also announced that South Africans ex-Sharks openside Jeandre Labuschagne and former Bath and Jersey Reds full-back Brendan Owen are joining from Yokohama Canon Eagles.

Tua admits that playing in Japan is something he has wanted to experience and is excited by the challenge of joining the club, coached by former Bath and Harlequins boss Tabai Matson.

“I am very grateful and very happy to be able to join Ricoh Black Rams Tokyo. I would like to thank the club for giving me this opportunity,” he said.

“Playing in Japan is something I’ve always wanted to experience, and I’m excited to start this new challenge.
