Clayton Blommetjies’s late miss costly as Bulls edge out Stormers

Clayton Blommetjies missed a late conversion as Stormers saw their six-match winning run at DHL Stadium come to an end in a 33-32 defeat to Bulls in their rearranged United Rugby Championship Round 1 fixture.

Stormers outscored their South African rivals five to four in tries with Frans Malherbe, Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos, Warrick Gelant and Ben-Jason Dixon crossing for the home side and Jurie Matthee kicking two conversions and one penalty.

Cobus Wiese, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Harold Vorster and Ruan Vermaak went over for Bulls, with David Kriel landing two conversions and three penalties, as they triumphed in Cape Town for the first time since 2021.

Still sitting with a lot of historical debt to service, a bum broadcast deal and forking over a Top-Line tax of 27% to CVC. Frankly speaking I don’t see them getting out of this hole any time soon without a merger with the URC.

I agree DMac is well suited to Rennieball, but the problems come when the ABs don’t get the fwd dominance & space/time required….they need to have a back up plan in place and that is where DMac struggles

I also think this game started to show you the strengthening bench by the AB’s.

Vaa’i shifting to lock with Frizzel hitting rucks and Segner being ready on the fringes shut down the opportunity and the AB’s bench strategy is improving.

In attack, I agree, we are doing more of what we do best. We are also getting g better at the defensive Breakdown.

In defence, we are also staying connected better and covering the paddock. Unfortunately, we are still very hesitant in our line speed.

Great post Mz.

I agree in what you are saying but this is also a good opportunity to understand the bench strength before RWC 2027 and it’s saying some of the younger players aren’t ready, so it’s what Kiss does next that makes the difference. When all fit he has a competitive matchday 23 (at full strength), what this confirms is he still has some work to build this out further to give him the depth he needs for a tournament run.

That is their argument, but the problem is that it isn't workingas the logic is flawed. Running is present in just about every sport. Why would I watch your running instead of my running?

You won't convert someone by offering what they already get elsewhere. Instead to convert someone, you need to offer them a differentiated product; something they don't get elsewhere.

To have kept the game close for 55 mins was a positive . . . . But those last 25 absolutely supports your view.

Tupou, Skelton, Hooper, Nawaqanitawase, Slipper, all strengthen the matchday 23 and that bench will quickly have a different feel to it but if we are honest the performances in the U20’s have been disappointing for a while and you are probably seeing the effects of that at the moment, where the wider bench strength and younger 23/24 year olds are not coming through giving you the wider depth you need.

Everything in the test at Eden Park and indeed for most tests Australia play against New Zealand in New Zealand was decided by the All Blacks going absolute bungo mode the moment they sensed their opportunity to turn things.

Australia put themselves under some pressure with some poor communication and execution which almost immediately gave way to a complete collapse of intensity and focus, allowing the All Blacks to hurriedly put in 21 points on 16 minutes.

Borthers has had 4 years in the role, he’s no longer new, this is the 2nd to 3rd wave of team he has selected . . . . and they have all been a little dull to watch with limited attack.

At some stage someone above his has to realise we have developed a decent forwards pack but the selection and tactics are not getting the best from the attack.

I think you are seeing the leagues realise they need to convert more fans, which is where most clubs generate their revenues and they are having to displace people from other sports, so you are seeing a quicker, more attacking game as they look to convert supporters from other sports towards rugby.

Leicester vs Gloucester was a very Welsh affair last week - Lake, Morgan, Reffell, Thomas, Wainwright, Cracknell . . . . They have all added to their clubs and I have to say it was a pleasure to watch them.

With Smith, Francis, LRZ (who is back to his best this season), Griffin, Hennessey, Carre, Tomkins, Jenkins, Tschunza . . . . You will start to see an improving Wales as a result. They have some good players, playing well and the PREM is becoming the main league for the Welsh 23 as a result.

Sadly, we always are, not just in this particular edition. Because New Zealand have the NPC and they're not afraid to have their ABs play in it, they always have a solid domestic pool to choose from.

Australia has no such luxury due to the painful continuing absence of a genuine domestic professional competition. Which means that outside of SRP the only place they can find like for like replacements is where they refuse to look, offshore.

Hi 2c, you sad “The whole match turned on Australia being completely unable to generate turnovers“ we must give NZ their due in this area, I have never seen them so fixated on speed to the breakdown and always at least 2 on hand, instantaneously after a tackle. Our guys were too slow getting there, even if they got there, it was blocked off very well.

I think Wallabies problem has been the same for over 20 years and that is the top 2”. One good win, and the performance drops, one arse smacking and they come back like men possessed. I wonder if they have a sports psychologist?

“Losing players to league” isn't a real problem because those players were always going to play league. If they wanted to play rugby, they'd choose rugby. But they choose league. So that's what they want and trying to stop them would be foolish and fruitless.

Losing talent offshore is a problem entirely of Australia's own making. If players can win contracts overseas even when they're largely still unproven that means other teams and countries can identify their talents where Australia can't.

Lonergan had an off game sure, but the point is he has made the step up to test rugby look easier and been consistent

I’d say the ABs definitively won the aerial battle, stats I saw was 8-3. They either regathered in the air or picked up the scraps, flooded the breakdown and generated front foot ball with our defense retreating. Or if we regathered they flooded the breakdown and turned it over as you say. It was probably the defining aspect of the game as our set piece was otherwise rock solid.

As you say Mz, if Australia didn't persist with the illusion that they can be competitive despite injuries and unavailability by maintaining essentially a Locals Only selection policy then they would likely be as effective as any other team in the world.

It's not like we don't produce plenty of top grade talent. That's precisely why they all get stolen to play in France and the UK. Foreign cashed up teams don't have to worry about competing with a robust domestic competition in order to sign players here unlike they do in New Zealand and South Africa.

Except he was equally guilty in Auckland for poor kicking and poor decision making. And Donno for a change didn't play substantially worse. In fact arguably he was one of the better players on the pitch.

The whole match turned on Australia being completely unable to generate turnovers which meant they couldn't stymy the Kiwis when they got on a roll.

Adding just Welsh clubs won’t work financialy for the Prem, and they are not that big a draw card for the English fans. The URC would also look to replace them with clubs from England and inevitably make more money. Difficult of Welsh fans to accept this but it’s reality.

I won’t drag you into the details but what will work in everybody’s favour is a merger between the Prem & URC. By combining these leagues into a unified multi-nation super-league, this would create a media product more than capable of securing their financial future. It would also probably allow both leagues to buy themselves out of the CVC deals and bring clubs like London Irish, Warriors etc back into the fold.
