Clayton Blommetjies’s late miss costly as Bulls edge out Stormers

Clayton Blommetjies missed a late conversion as Stormers saw their six-match winning run at DHL Stadium come to an end in a 33-32 defeat to Bulls in their rearranged United Rugby Championship Round 1 fixture.

Stormers outscored their South African rivals five to four in tries with Frans Malherbe, Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos, Warrick Gelant and Ben-Jason Dixon crossing for the home side and Jurie Matthee kicking two conversions and one penalty.

Cobus Wiese, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Harold Vorster and Ruan Vermaak went over for Bulls, with David Kriel landing two conversions and three penalties, as they triumphed in Cape Town for the first time since 2021.

Ireland played very well on 13 men, but how did that situation arise? The scrum was suffering even with all eight starters on the field.

Leinster are still good because they have so many excellent players but they are no longer innovating in the way they used to, and inspiring ppl.

Tighthead prop is a symptom as there is no natural replacement for Tadhg Furlong. Tom Clarkson is the likeliest but Nicky Smith gave him huge probs in the recent EPCR game v Tigers. Munster are starting their AIL guy who is in his thirties and has been in club rugby all of his life!

Hard not to feel Ireland have to make another jump to progress - it happens from time to time and their progress has been very smooth for the last 7 years or so now… I think Lancaster could be one key to further development, and as you say Mark Sexton could be another.

It would be a natural move for Aussie to relocate Suaalii or Petaia/Marky to a wing, even with the other one at FB. But they’d need to think differently to do it!

I was at Bath’s pre season training at the start of the season and saw how they now train for these aerial exchanges.

You basically have impact mats on the floor, a ball kicked for you to contest in that area and one player wearing pads that you jump into (staying on the ground who gives some resistance to jump into and provides some resistance as you come down), with another player in pads targeting the ball and bumping you in mid air.

In 2023 Ireland was a blade of grass away from a QF win and likely a final appearance (no disrespect to Argentina, but they would admit the 2023 team was not vintage and easily dispatched by the ABs in the semi). It depends on the draw and scheduling and 2027 looks ok.

I am glad what happened against SA happened. We had no cover in the second row after Ryan’s red and we suffered. Erasmus admitted that SA were not necessarily dominating in open play. The QF thing is annoying but the current squad want more. Ireland have been a top 4 team for many years. I don’t think having this finally reflected in a World Cup will be enough. Being able to fly under the radar now may help. But Ireland must use all her resources, must innovate.

I saw the result and then watched the game but it was a closer contest than the scoreline suggested for 60 mins but Saints were relentless in their constant attacking shapes and how many options they provide for Fin Smith to pull the trigger on it attack.

It’s not fair when they put Van der Mesh in the 12/13 channel off those 6 man line outs. You know what’s coming but you have to put 3 defenders forward to play human skittles and he comfortably wins the contact yards against them and leaves a massive numbers difference for the next wave of the Saints attack.

So many very good (even exceptional) tens out: Fin Smith, Handre Pollard, Mannie Libbok, Paolo Garbisi, Richie Mo’unga, both irish ones… Lucu and Depoortére are also missed. Well… fair enough, I think, no room for everyone.

The return of Lancaster to these shores is indeed major for Irish rugby. I expect the match between Leinster and Connaught might inflate conversations about his future.

Pat Lam’s spell in Ireland was massively beneficial. It showed that Ireland could excel with an attacking philosophy. That the weakest team on paper were able to rip the others apart (and win the pro-12) with an all out attack philosophy.
