Clayton Blommetjies’s late miss costly as Bulls edge out Stormers

Clayton Blommetjies missed a late conversion as Stormers saw their six-match winning run at DHL Stadium come to an end in a 33-32 defeat to Bulls in their rearranged United Rugby Championship Round 1 fixture.

Stormers outscored their South African rivals five to four in tries with Frans Malherbe, Salmaan Moerat, Evan Roos, Warrick Gelant and Ben-Jason Dixon crossing for the home side and Jurie Matthee kicking two conversions and one penalty.

Cobus Wiese, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Harold Vorster and Ruan Vermaak went over for Bulls, with David Kriel landing two conversions and three penalties, as they triumphed in Cape Town for the first time since 2021.

You just game me someone with 9 weeks off. Theres just no reason to compare SBs season, especially a full one. You’re saying it’s good that leagues can have players rested when needed, I said all leagues do that. SB season this year is irrelevant.

The captaincy load is the key factor. So whoever will be captain moving forward if theyve been captaining for a while before this.

I’m commenting on an article in which SB is getting to rest from the start of Super until probably the start of May with 3 rounds to go as he’s said he wants to play the back end of the competition. That’s around 11 weeks. Can you name me a French national team player getting that many weeks of rest after the offseason in the Top 14?

Really they all do it. Top players must be rested for like a dozen games in the Top 14, the most cowboy league at there.

Yeah I like that, but I really worry that TB and Hansen (at Japan) were JJ’s masterminds as well.

Razor won 4 titles when there was no Hansen, so maybe he does have a good feel for how to play rugby.

You are making up a load of stuff about Richie Mo’unga. He was the ultimate professional with the Crusaders , a big part of 7 titles 2017-23. He got continually undermined , especially in the period between the 2019 and 2023 World Cups by Foster. A great man with the fans too.

'Coaching at that level is very different to what most people think'

Yeah I don’t think how the go about doing it is too much of a ‘problem’, it’s more the level and experience of people like Razor in knowing what the right thing to do is. Robinson was probably just giving lip service to his duty, hopefully Kirk can wrinkle some truth out of the situation and be able to tell whether things like having belief Hansen was the goods were justified then, and before that with Ian Foster. Robinson (perhaps unfortunately for us, was there for both appoints of assistants.

It certainly seems like NZR could easily have hired whoever they wanted, just needed someone with kahunas to do it.

A good start would be a: 10 that is a genuine playmaker, a 12 that can bend the line, and a 13 that can distribute.

Kind of like to 2010-2015 team. I’m unsure why All Black coaches from Hansen (2016 cycle), Foster, and Robertson onwards all want to try a different template. Hansen should’ve known after the 2017 Lions series that his new ideas weren't up to beating really good teams.
