Canadian international claims MLR MVP after Chicago’s perfect season

Canadian international Brock Webster has claimed the top individual honour in Major League Rugby after a remarkable season with the Chicago Hounds, recognised as the 2026 MLR Player of the Year presented by CTMS Travel.

But it’s a season that almost didn’t happen for Webster, who eventually found a new MLR home in Chicago. The outside back started in all 11 appearances for the Hounds, as they completed a history-making undefeated run to the championship.

Chicago became the first team in league history to complete a perfect campaign, with Webster leading that charge with some spectacular stats. The fullback scored six tries, ran the ball 92 times for 549 metres, beat 36 defenders and made 18 stops in defence.

Webster was first named the MLR Player of the Week in round five, after touching down for a hat-trick against the Seattle Seawolves. MLR Team of the Week honours followed in rounds seven and eight, which reflects his standout season.

The Canadian played the full 80 in the big dance against the California Legion, as the Hounds ran away with a 35-17 win at SeatGeek Stadium. With that result, the 25-year-old has become a two-time MLR champion after a successful stint in New England.

Webster had earned a 2025 All-MLR Honourable Mention after helping the New England Free Jacks win a third consecutive title, and was named the Championship MVP after producing an impressive performance.

Some of Webster’s teammates have stepped up to the international arena with the USA Eagles, as they went on an unbeaten 3-0 run during the first block of matches in the all-new World Rugby Nations Cup this month.

Chicago prop Charlie Abel debuted for the Hounds last weekend against Spain, in a team that included fellow Hounds forward Nathan den Hoedt. The USA have beaten three teams bound for Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 in consecutive weeks.

“It’s just about being confident in the plan and really all-out belief in each other and what we’re out here trying to do,” USA captain Jason Damm said on the broadcast, which you can watch on RugbyPass TV HERE.

“We’ve been under pressure these three games. Spain put us under a heap of pressure, flipped the score on us late in the game but we just had belief in the plan and knew we’re going to come out on top.

“We know our kicking game is going to put teams under pressure in attack and if we get up and made sur our line is stout, make them give us the ball back, we know we can flip that pressure right back on them.

“Our bench impact has ben unreal in the way that they come in and throw their bodies around, definitely generates these wins.”
