Canada Women’s Sevens have been dealt a double injury blow in the wake of their fifth-place finish in Vancouver last weekend.

This includes the team’s captain, Carissa Norsten, who confirmed on social media that she has sustained an ACL injury.

The 22-year-old Olympic silver medalist sustained the injury in her team’s 14-12 loss to Pool B rivals Fiji on day one of the competition at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

She wrote: “Gutted that I won’t be back on the pitch for a while but always grateful for the chance to play at home, see u soon.”

Norsten was appointed as Canada’s captain at the start of the 2025/26 HSBC SVNS Series season by Jocelyn Barrieau and has led the side at five tournaments.

Upon the appointment her head coach described Norsten as “everything a Canadian captain should be.”

Piper Logan was also a casualty of the team’s home event. Three minutes into her first tournament of the season, the 24-year-old wrote on social media that she had “torn” her MCL.

Logan said: “Well… That might be the shortest comeback story of all time! My international return lasted a whole 3 minutes. I’ve torn my MCL again.

“I don’t know what the next few months look like for me, but I do know that I love this team and I love representing Canada. I’m grateful to have had one last run out of the Vancouver 7s tunnel to remind me of how much it means to me. I’ll let that be the memory I conjure during my many seated conditioning sessions ahead.”

At the end of two days’ action on home soil, Canada finished fifth and capped off a frustrating weekend with victory over Fiji. The side currently sit fifth in the overall HSBC SVNS Series standings.

This weekend in New York, the side have been named in Pool B with the USA, Japan and Australia. They will begin their tournament against the home favourites at Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey.
