Cam Roigard extends NZR deal with an eye on 2029 Lions tour

Cam Roigard is locked in with New Zealand Rugby for the long haul, with a new deal through until 2029 announced on Wednesday morning.

The 25-year-old All Blacks star has emerged as one of New Zealand’s most lethal attacking talents since his 2023 Test debut, although injuries have reduced him to just 17 All Blacks appearances.

His pre-existing contract extends until 2027, but Roigard was keen to confirm his playing future in New Zealand with a British & Irish Lions tour on the horizon.

“I’m loving my rugby right now, and the opportunity to represent the All Blacks, the Hurricanes and Counties Manukau here in New Zealand is something I don’t take for granted,” the halfback said.

“It has always been a dream of mine since I was a kid to play Super Rugby and be an All Black, and I want to continue living that dream.”

With 12 tries to his name in the black jersey, Roigard has assumed Aaron Smith’s No.9 throne and is three games shy of bringing up 50 caps for the Hurricanes, having debuted for the club in 2021.

“Cam is an outstanding young man, and already one of the best halfbacks in world rugby. We’re thrilled he’s committed through to 2029 and that he’ll continue to play in New Zealand through the prime of his career,” NZR General Manager Professional Rugby & Performance Chris Lendrum said.

“It’s encouraging to see our top players recognising the challenge and opportunity of the global calendar over the next period and choosing to continue their rugby in our environments.”

Hurricanes Head Coach Clark Laidlaw was excited to have a significant piece of the club’s future locked in.

“It’s huge news for the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby,” he said. “For us, it’s massively exciting. He’s gone from a wildcard pick a few years back to establishing himself as one of the best halfbacks in the world.

“Both the Hurricanes and Cam have done a lot of work to get to that point, and we can’t wait to continue that journey with him as he continues to improve his game and grow his experience and leadership. That’s something we’re really fortunate and grateful for. He’s a strong character within the group, an outstanding professional, and we really look forward to having him with the team and the club over the next few years.”

Never ceases to amaze me how slow the fraternity are to realise what they got. Cam was hardly a wildcard, he was a star when I first noticed him in rep rugby (he had to move from Waikato I think to get his shot though) and immediately killed it for the Canes and All Blacks and should have been used more in 2023.

I’m suprised I haven’t heard the Lions series referenced more in the coaching appointments either, with most expecting a short term gig being offered now so that the next coach can have the four year WC cycle, but arguably the Lions tour (much the same as this years Rivalry tour is) more important than a WC and this next coach should have four years to build to it (rather than the following coach having two).

It’s no stretch to say we might have won the WC final if Roigard was on the bench instead of Christie. Fozzie fans like to claim he almost won a WC, but that defensive selection right there in many ways helped lose it. SA were on their last legs after a hellish route to the final, bringing on a fresh Roigard, who had punished them just a few weeks before, could have made all the difference.
